A Country Christmas Part 1: The Holidays in Appalachia

You Don’t Always Get a Snowy Christmas in Appalachia

Over the Christmas break, we found our way to two of our favorite shooting areas, the southern mountains of Appalachia and the rugged seacoast of New England.  Over the course of our trip, we took several excursions to a variety of locations, some new to us and others old and familiar.  We began our photo adventure by exploring Continue reading

Essence of Summer Part 1: Sunset Glories

Deremer Studios Fine Art Appalachia Photography

As a New Englader, Florida summers are, in a word, torture.  And so, as the temperatures rise, we do our best to take to the road and plot a course north for a few weeks of fine art photography.   That means, over the next few weeks, we’ll be uploading some of our favorite photos from our recent adventure for your viewing and downloading pleasure.  We’re calling this collection Essence of Summer.  Stay with us!

Tonight’s post is mostly from an excursion up to one of my favorite places in the world – White Top Mountain, in extreme western Virginia.  With big boomers to the northeast and some clouds between me and the sun, I wasn’t sure what I would get, but the trip proved rewarding, offering up probably the most stunning sunset I have experienced up on the mountain.  And, as an extra added bonus, I discovered that the path I wander down to shoot these images is actually a little known trail locals like to call the ‘AT’.  So, that means I can say I hike the Appalachian Trail a few times a year, right?  It might be the same 100 yards, but hey, at least it’s something…

I also have to give a big shout out to Enterprise Rent-A-Car.  The company proved a gigantic life saver.  While visiting Virginia, we had two automotive shoots down in Atlanta – so I had reserved a vehicle to pick up part of the way up to VA, so that I could drive directly to Atlanta and the family could continue to our destination.  Unfortunately, after several hours on the phone, we discovered the company with which we had reserved a car not only did not have the type of car we had reserved, but didn’t have a single vehicle available to rent…in the entire tri-city region!  Thankfully, the folks at Enterprise were more than happy to help, and put me in a great Elantra (above) at a better rate – and did so with 30 minutes notice!

As always, please feel free to download as many photos as you like – they are full HD images, 1080P, and perfect for your computer, tablet or television – and if you enjoy our photos, please follow us – and for extra bonus points, share this blog with your friends to help us get the word out!

The Summer Adventure: Fine Art Panoramas from our Travels

2014 07 Fine Art Panorama - Summer Trip 02 Great Bay NH Foggy Sunset Newicks

The blog has been a bit scatter-brained over the past month, with no particular order – so why change, right?  Today we are featuring several of our ultra-high resolution 100 megapixel fine art panoramas from our recent photo expeditions.  Above is one of our favorite panoramas from a foggy evening shoot in Dover Point, NH, just outside of the great local seafood restaurant, Newick’s.  That evening proved an absolutely stunning display of glory and we were able to capture several panoramas as day gave way to night.  While in Virginia, we visited one of our favorite locations, White Top Mountain (below) and despite never fully seeing the sun as it set, the low cloud layer and never-ending layers of ridges made for some pretty panoramas all the same.

Up North – Fine Art Shoots from North of FL: Winter Wonderland on White Top Mountain, VA

So, I may have said that the previous post was may last post from our trip, but as I have come to learn, I’m not always right!  God surprised me with a wonderful treat our last day in Virginia and with the weather being rather frigid for much of us here in the US, I thought this post might at least bring some beauty to the otherwise dreary weather.

As we were winding up our trip, one last little snowfall came to Virginia.  In the hills of Abingdon it was a light dusting, but as I set out with family that morning, I went over a rise (above) and saw that Mt. Rogers and White Top Mountain were both covered in a layer of snow that looked so light and fluffy that it could be mistaken for a cloud.  Later that afternoon, my eldest daughter and I braved the roads, ascending the western slope of White Top.  At about 3,500 feet, the sparse snow gave way to an amazing winter wonderland – with trees absolutely covered in a delicate coating of white.  And as we climbed, it just kept getting better!  Prudence had me turn around before attempting the final mile of dirt road up to the summit, but there was an array of beauty to be had as we descended – such as the image below.  Toward the bottom of the mountain, with the sun setting to our left, I found a few old buildings, covered with just a hint of snow – a perfect way to end our winter adventure.

Up North – Fine Art Shoots from North of Florida: Western Virginia

2013 12 Fine 04 Virginia Mountain Sunrise White Top

We recently had the pleasure of heading out on a few fine art excursions over the winter break.  Our trip began in western Virginia, near Bristol, TN – where I managed to get up in time for a gorgeous sunrise over the Blue Ridge Mountains.  I recently added a 1.4x teleconverter to our equipment, which allowed me to get up close and personal with both the moon and the blinding sun as it rose over the mountains.  By the time the sun crested the rise, it was far too bright to look at. My solution – I would aim slightly to the left, focus the camera, close my eyes, and then shift the camera right until I felt the sun on my eye.  It took a few tries, but I was able to get the shot I wanted without seeing spots for the next 6 hours…
