Longing for Cooler Climes

A Reminder of Winter on This Hot Florida Day

We’ve hit a seasonal milestone here in Florida – one that is unique to photographers and glass-wearers that inevitably signals the coming of summer in Florida. This week, while on a shoot, I ventured from inside an air-conditioned Winn-Dixie to the outside, and instantly, my lens fogged up – a sign of the humidity and accompanying heat that comes with a Florida summer. Full disclosure, I do not care for Florida summers – and so for my fellow sufferers, here’s a sampling from our winter collection – a chilly reminder that this too shall pass…

A Very Autumn New England Winter – With a Side of Snow

New England Winter at its Awkwardest!

Deremer Studios Fine Art Photography

If you’ve been following the news at all, you probably know that this winter has been a bit… well… mild in New England.  In fact this year’s New England winter had been downright non-existent, with early autumn temperatures visiting us as late as the last week of December.  In fact, when we arrived in New Hampshire for our annual winter visit, the weather was so warm that we were out building a stick fort with the kids in shorts an t-shirts.  Though fun, it wasn’t exactly what we were hoping for. But, on the bright side, the unseasonably warm New England winter did have some advantages – for example, not suffering from frostbite on a pre-dawn Nubble Light shoot (above).  Plus, it has been years and years since I’d built a stick fort, so that was a nice walk down memory lane to share with the kids.

However, at long last, the jet stream dipped and a cold front came through, bringing that long-awaited first snow just before the New Year.  In Greenland, NH, about 5 miles from the ocean, we got about 6 inches of sometimes fluffy, sometimes wet snow.  Just enough for constructing our annual snow fort with the kids.  On our final day in New England, as we were packing for the long drive south, the sun had finally come out and with it, a beautiful sunburst shining through the dripping, misty trees.  The photo above is from just outside our door, with the Winnicut River slowly flowing along its banks as the night’s ice slowly melted.  Of course, this New England winter is far from over,  but if December was any indication of what is to come, perhaps this New England winter will be a bit more tolerable than the unceasing snows of the previous winter season.

Autumn in the National Parks – Grand Tetons

Deremer Studios Fine Art Photography - Out West

After four wonderful days in Yellowstone, we left Old Faithful Inn in the rear view mirror quite early on the sixth day of our trip – headed south on Highway 89 toward Grand Tetons National Park.  Our first glimpse of the Tetons was just as first light was casting its pinkish hue on the mountains, far off in the distance.  The morning was cold enough for mist to be rising off of the Lewis River, perfectly completing the composition.  As we continued south and the sun rose over the horizon, the pastel colors gave way to vibrant blues behind the ever-growing vista of the Grand Tetons.  Though we only had about 4 hours to spend in the park, it was a morning well spent, gazing at these rocky monoliths rising 5,000 feet above the valley floor, and accented, as in the photo above from Colter Bay, by the golden glory of the autumn aspens.

We chose to venture along the less-traveled Teton Park Rd which runs along the lakes that border the Tetons.   Being more or less acclimated to the utter flatness that is Florida, looking out just over a mile away to see a summit, nearly a mile above us, was a pretty spectacular contrast.  Near Moose, along the southern edge of the park, Bryn suggested we stop by the village of Menors Ferry – a pioneer settlement built around a ferry crossing along the swift-moving Snake River.  Preserved much as it appeared 120 years ago, the collection of buildings includes a few small homes, a general store, and an Episcopalian Chapel (above).  The general store is run by the national park and offers many period-true items for purchase, and in the adjoining rooms there’s a museum offering a glimpse into frontier life at the base of the Tetons.  During the summer months, you can even take a ride on the ferry.  One last note – if you stop by, be sure to check out the small poll barn on the property.  The barn holds three wagons – two Yellowstone tour wagons (used to take guests to the park from lodge to lodge up until 1913) and the covered wagon the Menor family used to cross over the Tetons into this valley.

Calendar Time – February HD Desktop Wallpaper!

2014 02 February - Nubble Light at Dawn Calendar Wallpaper

You guessed it – another month has come, stopped by for what seemed like only a few days, and is already headed back out the door.  And with the change in months comes our monthly HD desktop wallpaper.  As always, our February wallpaper is in 1920 x 1080P HD format, perfect for your widescreen monitors, TVs or other devices.    This month features a variety of vistas to help remind us of that despite the cold and inconvenience, winter is a time of beauty – and for those just plane sick and tired of the frigid temps, a few warmer reminders that winter is but one season and this too shall pass.  Our most popular wallpaper from last month was of the snowy New Hampshire coast, so you’ll find another shot – this time of Portsmouth’s waterfront covered in snow and lit by the warm dawn sunshine.

I’ve also included a photo from atop Pike’s Peak, the above photo of pre-dawn light at Nubble Light, and, just for kicks, a cute baby Rhino from a visit to our friends at White Oak Conservation Center. Lastly, as is our tradition, I’ve given you another of my favorite cars from the 2013 Amelia Island Concours D’Elegance. This 1930 Duesenberg Model J Dual Cowl Phaeton hails from the land of my youth (New Hampshire) and is an especially pretty example of its class.   For more details on this unique car, check out RM’s listing here.  If you want more automotive-themed desktop wallpaper, be sure to check out our Automotive section!
