The Wild Blue Yonder – 2014 NAS Jacksonville Air Show

2014 10 Aviation - NAS Jacksonville Airshow 12 - P-51 Crazy Horse F-22 Heritage Flight

After an amazing evening photographing a very literally out of this world sunset earlier in the week, we had the pleasure of photographing some objects in lower earth ‘orbit’ at the 2014 NAS Jacksonville Air Show.  With near-perfect weather and a year-long delay, the air show welcomed a record number of aviation enthusiasts, with over 300,000 people estimated to have been in attendance over the weekend.  The air show featured a generous selection of aircraft on static display, from a navy helicopter drone to the massive C-17 Globemaster.  In the air a variety of nationally-recognized stunt pilots amazed spectators with their gravity-defying displays.  There were also a few attractions that never quite left the ground, including a jet powered school bus that belched 200 foot flames, a jet port-a-potty and a speeding snoopy atop his rather fast moving dog house.  But for me, the two neatest highlights were the demonstrations by an F-22 Raptor and the always amazing flying feats of the Blue Angels.

2014 10 23 Fine - Partial Solar Eclipse 02 - Jacksonville FL Dam

What an amazing evening!  I just had to quickly share a few images, but check back soon to see some more from tonight’s shoot of the partial solar eclipse from my vantage point in Jacksonville, FL.  I tell you what, I’ve never had the privilege of photographing a solar eclipse before, and thanks to my trusty ND filter, I was able to photograph this amazing event without irreparably burning my retinas – which to me, is a good thing!  Enjoy the photos – they’re all in 1080P HD format, perfect for desktop wallpaper!

When a Cloudy Sunset Turns Into a Good Thing

2014 09 Fine Art - Cloudy St Johns Sunset 04 - Sisters Creek Boa

It’s not often that I am thankful for thick clouds on the horizon as the sun is setting.  The typical results are muted colors, and a greyish sky.  But that wasn’t the case last night.  Providentially, we instead were able to capture other-worldly shots like the one above.  The large thunderhead that was looming on the horizon had just enough of a break along the southern side to allow a beam of pink light to hit the lower cumulus clouds to the south.  And so, for about 5 minutes I snapped furiously and just as quickly as it came, it was gone again.  What an amazing display of God’s creative wonders!

Photo of the Day: Hungry, Hungry Spider?

2014 09 Fine Art - Femal Banana Spider 02 Dinner Time

Last night, around twilight, I was walking around our backyard and happened to notice that the banana spider that I had spotted a few months ago, living on our yellow canna plants, was now rather gigantic.  To give you a reference, her body is about two inches long, with the span of her legs being about four inches.  Last night, she had just begun wrapping her dinner – a small fly – and when I returned this morning, she was nearly complete.   What a cool creature!

Exploring East: Travels Along the Atlantic States – Maine Lakes

2013 07 Fine Art New England 02 Rangeley

Though not especially breathtaking, Rangeley, Maine has to be one of my top five favorite places to visit and photograph.  This little town, huddled along the shore of its large lake, perfectly blends the charms of an out-of-the-way hamlet with some modern amenities and conveniences that make life just easy enough while still feeling like you’re sort of roughing it.   Once every one or two years, we make the several hour trip and rent a cabin at the charming Town and Lake Motel, perched along one of the pristine inlets of Rangeley Lake.    As with years past, we spent our time exploring the lake and its wildlife, and venturing up Route 16 toward the Canadian border on the hunt for moose.

Above, was a new find this year – a mother common merganser with her young. I was surprised to find this little family several hundred feet from shore.  As always, enjoy – and of course, feel free to download as HD desktop wallpaper below!
