Down East Road Trip – Acadia National Park & Bar Harbor

3 Days of Wonder and Nostalgia in New England’s Only National Park

Acadia National Park & Bar Harbor - Bass Harbor Light Spectacular Sunset

New England, and certainly Acadia National Park, has always held a special place in my heart. I grew up in coastal New Hampshire and some of my fondest childhood memories center around family trips to the park. It was here, my brother and I took our first flight, soaring silently above the rounded mountains of Mt. Desert Island in a glider, and to this day, a clock hangs in my parents house with a photo of my brother, myself and our cousins atop Cadillac Mountain from a trip in the early 90’s. It was here too, that I took Bryn for her first trip to New England, before we were even dating, now 20 years ago, and here we returned two years later as part of our honeymoon. And so, after a far-too-long time away, we returned again this summer to Acadia to introduce our own children to a park that holds so many of our treasured memories.

Summer Dreams – Visiting The Isles of Shoals

Exploring the Craggy and Historic Sentinels of the New Hampshire Coast

A Summer Visit to New England's Isles of Shoals
A Summer Visit to New England's Isles of Shoals

Every once in a while, if the conditions are just right, we’ll get a summer’s day here in Florida that reminds me of my beloved New Hampshire childhood. Today is just such a day, with unseasonably low humidity, azure blue skies, the chirping of songbirds and a gentle breeze that transports me back to a lazy summer day in New England. It was on just such a day that Bryn and I visited the Isles of Shoals for the first time back in July of 2017.

Summer Wanderings Part 1: Maine

Down East in the Heart of Maine

Deremer Studios Fine Art Photography

As has become our tradition, we dedicated much of our summer to exploring the eastern bits of our fine country, among visits to family and friends.  This year was no exception – with a trip, perhaps a bit longer than we would like – to explore Northern New England, Cape Cod, Rural Vermont, and central Appalachia.  For your viewing pleasure, we’ll be publishing one post for each state we photographed: Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts, Vermont, Virginia and Tennessee.

Above, is one of our favorite shots from a pair of loons we’ve been photographing for the past several years.  They spend their summers on Rangeley Lake, located in northwestern Maine, a handful of miles from both the New Hampshire and Canadian borders.  The birds have developed a bit of a pattern, and can be found most mornings and evenings along the strip of lake where we stay.  Unfortunately, this year they were not accompanied by a chick, but hopefully they will have more luck again next season.

While in New England, we also took a day trip to Boothbay, Maine.  Located about an hour north of Portland, this area of Maine offers a wide variety of tourist-oriented adventures, from puffin tours, to the Boothbay Railway Village (pictured above).  This was our first time to this part of Maine, and the park proved especially enjoyable, offering vintage train rides, a collection of several dozen historic structures, many of which you could tour, a large collection of antique cars, and an extensive model railway.

As always, please feel free to download as many photos as you like – we have sized the photos to 1080P HD wallpaper, perfect for your desktop, laptop, tablet or TV – and if you enjoy our photos, please share this blog with your friends and help us get the word out!

A Very Autumn New England Winter – With a Side of Snow

New England Winter at its Awkwardest!

Deremer Studios Fine Art Photography

If you’ve been following the news at all, you probably know that this winter has been a bit… well… mild in New England.  In fact this year’s New England winter had been downright non-existent, with early autumn temperatures visiting us as late as the last week of December.  In fact, when we arrived in New Hampshire for our annual winter visit, the weather was so warm that we were out building a stick fort with the kids in shorts an t-shirts.  Though fun, it wasn’t exactly what we were hoping for. But, on the bright side, the unseasonably warm New England winter did have some advantages – for example, not suffering from frostbite on a pre-dawn Nubble Light shoot (above).  Plus, it has been years and years since I’d built a stick fort, so that was a nice walk down memory lane to share with the kids.

However, at long last, the jet stream dipped and a cold front came through, bringing that long-awaited first snow just before the New Year.  In Greenland, NH, about 5 miles from the ocean, we got about 6 inches of sometimes fluffy, sometimes wet snow.  Just enough for constructing our annual snow fort with the kids.  On our final day in New England, as we were packing for the long drive south, the sun had finally come out and with it, a beautiful sunburst shining through the dripping, misty trees.  The photo above is from just outside our door, with the Winnicut River slowly flowing along its banks as the night’s ice slowly melted.  Of course, this New England winter is far from over,  but if December was any indication of what is to come, perhaps this New England winter will be a bit more tolerable than the unceasing snows of the previous winter season.

Essence of Summer Part 6: In Panorama

Deremer Studios Fine Art Photography

What better way to summarize our trip than to share with you a collection of our favorite panoramas from our Essence of Summer collection.  In total, we spent the better part of a month on the road – with corporate shoots in Atlanta, fine art shoots in North Carolina, Virginia, New Hampshire and Maine, and some much needed R&R with both sides of our family.  We had the opportunity to photograph a wide variety of settings and subjects, from loons, mergansers and moose, to tall ships and living history, to rainbows, thunderstorms, and spectral sunsets.  All in all, it felt like a pretty productive trip, though I will say that the new camera’s gigantic file size did make for slow going while editing images on the road.  In the next few weeks, you’ll see many of the photos from these posts appear on our fine art site, and should you want to purchase any of our affordably priced prints, you are welcome to drop us a line.  We hope you enjoyed joining us on our adventure and we plan to keep you up to date on new fine art projects from time to time.
