Fireworks on the Piscatiqua River - Portsmouth, NH

After a warm summer day filled with hot dogs and watermelon, parades and performances; Americans gather together en mass along lakeside beaches, municipal sports fields and picturesque river fronts in anxious anticipation of the booming barrage to come. As the last tendrils of daylight blend into the growing blue-black expanse of twilight, a single, solitary flare blazes a vertical trail into the sky, signaling the start of the fireworks display.

Sneak Peek: Disney Seven Dwarfs Mine Train at Night

This is a bit out of our normal realm of photography, but while on a family trip to Disney this weekend, we discovered that the new Seven Dwarfs Mine Train was open during the evening for preview rides.  Needless to say, we were pretty excited, but there was only one problem – I had left our work cameras in the car.  So, with iPhone and a little waterproof camera in hand, I tried my best to get some descent shots to share with friends and followers alike. But, because of the very low light, the results weer lackluster.  Fast forward 24 hours, and we made a special trip to ride again, this time with our professional gear in tow.

So, here’s a photographic sneak peek of Disney’s great new ride before it opens!  Let’s start with the line – which was about 60 minutes long.  As Disney has began to do, there are several great game stations with interactive screens (above) and fun activities that help the time go by.  You can see photos of each station in the gallety below.   The ride itself is about as quick and slithery as Thunder Mountain – though smoother thanks to the suspended cars – and it also has a slower portion in the middle that takes you on a tour through the Dwarfs’ gem-crusted mine (below).

Fine Art Shoot: Disney Fireworks with a side of Sandhill

As you might expect, I try to never be too far away from my camera, even when on vacation.  While carrying in a large camera bag and tripod into Disney isn’t exactly what you would call convenient, every time I’ve done so, I have been glad I did.   As with any heavily attended event, trying to get the best spot for fireworks at Disney means coming early, so that’s what we did.  after staking out my spot, I popped on my ND filter to experiment with some long exposures just as day was giving way to dusk – and the above image was one of my favorite results.  Even though I’ve been doing this for well over a decade, I still really enjoy just playing with the camera!

A New View – Disney Fireworks HD Wallpaper from a Novel Perspective

Undoubtedly, you’ve seen and perhaps even taken your own photos of the evening fireworks at Disney World’s Magic Kingdom.  Over the years, we’ve explored various locations to shoot this wonderful show – from the iconic images of the Castle from Main Street, to wide shots from the Polynesian Resort (you can download some of our favorite shots from previous visits here).  This time, we took to the heights to shoot the fireworks from the Contemporary Resort.  It proved to be a really great location!

I would be remiss if I did not mention what brought us to Orlando over the long weekend.  If you’ve been following our blog for some time, you know that my wife an co-owner, Bryn, was diagnosed with breast cancer back in November of 2012.  As you can imagine, the year has been filled with ups and downs as Bryn has gone through surgery, chemo and a seemingly unending stream of appointments and treatments over the past year.  We are thankful that God allowed Bryn and the doctors to catch her cancer early – resulting in a good prognosis, even though she is so young.  We have been blessed by wonderful doctors, nurses and technicians, a great hospital and support from not only our biological families, but also our neighbors and church family.  Add to all of this, a wonderful gift from the Memories of Love organization – who sent us to Orlando to enjoy time with our family and explore Sea World and Universal Studios.  It was a wonderfully renewing gift that we are so very thankful for.

As you enjoy your Fourth of July picnics, parties and celebrations across the country (and for many of you abroad), we thought it would be nice to share a few of our favorite fireworks-themed desktop wallpaper.  We’ve included a selection of our favorite man-made fireworks wallpaper, such as the one above, as well as some of our favorite sunset and lighting photos for those of you that enjoy a bit more natural “fireworks”.  As always, feel free to download.  Most of these images are 1920×1080 full HD wallpaper.
