Flash! Bang! Field Test with the New Canon 5DS

Deremer Studios Fine Art Photography

After a short delay, our new Canon 5Ds finally arrived, and last night proved the perfect opportunity to test out some of its capabilities.  As I headed home from a meeting at church, the lightning was popping all over the place – and not just single bolts (like the photo above), but the kind of lightning with tendrils that expand and fracture across the entire sky.  So, after a brief stop at the studio to grab the new camera and a brief consult of my radar app, I went out to one of my favorite spots and started shooting.  The gallery below features some of my favorite shots.

As far as the camera goes, I had it paired with our 24-70 2.8L II lens, and I was taken back by the sharpness in the photos.  With a 50 megapixel sensor, the detail this camera can capture is truly amazing.  And, because there is an over-abundance of pixels, low light noise patterns are greatly diminished in the finished work.  Also of note, the shutter is considerably more quiet and the dynamic range seems to be a stop or so improved over the 5D Mk III.  So far, I am very impressed with the camera.

Nibbling the Sun – Partial Solar Eclipse at Sunset

2014 10 23 Fine - Partial Solar Eclipse 02 - Jacksonville FL Dam

What an amazing evening!  I just had to quickly share a few images, but check back soon to see some more from tonight’s shoot of the partial solar eclipse from my vantage point in Jacksonville, FL.  I tell you what, I’ve never had the privilege of photographing a solar eclipse before, and thanks to my trusty ND filter, I was able to photograph this amazing event without irreparably burning my retinas – which to me, is a good thing!  Enjoy the photos – they’re all in 1080P HD format, perfect for desktop wallpaper!

When a Cloudy Sunset Turns Into a Good Thing

2014 09 Fine Art - Cloudy St Johns Sunset 04 - Sisters Creek Boa

It’s not often that I am thankful for thick clouds on the horizon as the sun is setting.  The typical results are muted colors, and a greyish sky.  But that wasn’t the case last night.  Providentially, we instead were able to capture other-worldly shots like the one above.  The large thunderhead that was looming on the horizon had just enough of a break along the southern side to allow a beam of pink light to hit the lower cumulus clouds to the south.  And so, for about 5 minutes I snapped furiously and just as quickly as it came, it was gone again.  What an amazing display of God’s creative wonders!

EXTREME Weather – Jacksonville EF2 Tornado Photos, but Abiding Beauty

2013 08 Weather Jacksonville Tornado EF2 02

What a Day for Wild Weather in Jacksonville, FL!  At our office, we collected 5.2 inches of rain in under 2 hours!  And if that weren’t amazing enough, just a few miles down the road, a quarter-mile wide EF2 tornado touched down and caused extensive damage.  Tornadoes and waterspouts are somewhat common to our area, with one or two a year, but it is extremely rare for an EF2 tornado to hit northern Florida.  Thankfully, no one was killed or seriously injured, and the Tornado was only on the ground for a half mile or less, but as you can see from the photos, it caused quite the damage.  Be sure to look at the gallery to see the 2×4 imbedded half way through a second story wall.

However, the day was not entirely marked by destruction. As I was headed home after shooting the aftermath of the tornado, I saw this amazing afterglow from the sunset.  Amazing!  Enjoy the photos – and of course, feel free to download as HD desktop wallpaper below!

Photo of the Day: Lighting over the Dames Point

1920 x 1280 DS Wallpaper 143 Dames Point Lightening

I stepped outside this evening to take a look at the tree frogs that have taken over the front of our house, only to see some pretty frequent lightning to our Northwest.  What did I do next, you ask?  Well I pulled up the radar to see where the most intense cells were, made sure they were safely distant and determined that I might just be able to get a good shot of the Dames Point Bridge with a bit of lightning sprinkled in the back.  Unfortunately, in the ten minutes it took me to get down to my favorite spot, the storm had dissipated and the intense stuff mostly moved south. But I was still able to snap a few shots as hoped before all the activity shifted.  Here’s my favorite.  As always, please feel free to download the image – it is full HD 1080P – perfect for desktop wallpaper!
