Jacksonville’s Muggy and Mystifying 2019 Sea and Sky Spectacular Air Show

Jacksonville Air Show - Sea and Sky Spectacular - F-35 transonic cone cloud

Ever since I can remember, I have loved planes. In fact, it was my love of aviation that brought me from my childhood home in New England to Florida back in the late 90’s to study to be a pilot. So, it should come as no surprise that I love air shows. One of my earliest memories is standing atop a hill overlooking Pease Air Force Base (now Pease Tradeport) as one of the Thunderbirds flew right over my head – seemingly just a few feet above me. There is just something about an air show – the raw power of the planes, the almost superhuman skill of the pilots, and then there’s the back-to-back death defying feats on display for all to see. Its no wonder that even the threat of rain couldn’t keep out the crowds for the 2019 Jacksonville Sea and Sky Spectacular this past weekend. Here’s just a taste of the sights from this weekend, and be sure to check out our full gallery for many, many more fine art images from the air show.

The Plane! the Plane! 2015 Sea and Sky Spectacular

Little known fact: when I was a child, I really, really, really wanted to be a pilot – I dreamed of flying fighters for the Air Force and even began the lengthy process of applying for the academy.  If it weren’t for my sudden need of glasses, who knows where I would be today.  Yet I was undeterred and headed to college with every intent of becoming a pilot and flying commercially.  However, after a year of flight training, I realized that while I love flying, the appeal of commercial aviation as a career began to wane, and… so here I am today, a professional photographer, writing this post for your enjoyment (or derision if you prefer).

But enough about me.  Let’s talk about this weekend’s Sea and Sky Spectacular at Jacksonville Beach.  Sunday afternoon, after church, we headed out to see the air show – though the weather was less than ideal and threatened rain, the show area managed to stay precipitation-free the entire time.   The show itself was filled with a wonderful variety of performers, from solo acts and formation groups, to historic flights from a couple of P-51 Mustangs and an F4U Corsair, to Fat Albert and the Blue Angels.  Because of all the moisture in the air, the planes were throwing vapor trails left and right, which made for some pretty cool opportunities, like the one above.

The Wild Blue Yonder – 2014 NAS Jacksonville Air Show

2014 10 Aviation - NAS Jacksonville Airshow 12 - P-51 Crazy Horse F-22 Heritage Flight

After an amazing evening photographing a very literally out of this world sunset earlier in the week, we had the pleasure of photographing some objects in lower earth ‘orbit’ at the 2014 NAS Jacksonville Air Show.  With near-perfect weather and a year-long delay, the air show welcomed a record number of aviation enthusiasts, with over 300,000 people estimated to have been in attendance over the weekend.  The air show featured a generous selection of aircraft on static display, from a navy helicopter drone to the massive C-17 Globemaster.  In the air a variety of nationally-recognized stunt pilots amazed spectators with their gravity-defying displays.  There were also a few attractions that never quite left the ground, including a jet powered school bus that belched 200 foot flames, a jet port-a-potty and a speeding snoopy atop his rather fast moving dog house.  But for me, the two neatest highlights were the demonstrations by an F-22 Raptor and the always amazing flying feats of the Blue Angels.

Flying High with Audi at the NAS JAX Air Show – Part 3 [The Panoramas]

Here’s our third and final installment from the air show – our Panoramas.

One of the unique things we provide at the majority of our shoots are ultra-high resolution panoramas.  This is a fun and unique way to capture all the activity in a wide area while maintaining lots of crisp quality, even at very large sizes.  Enjoy!

Flying High with Audi at the NAS JAX Air Show – Part 2 [The Planes]

Here’s Part 2 from this weekend’s Air Show. For those of you who missed the first post, we had the opportunity to shoot this year’s show on behalf of the title sponsor, Jack Hanania Automotive Group.

Aviation goes way back in my family.  My grandfather flew a P-51 during WWII and so the P-51 holds a special place in my heart (right next to my TR-6 if you were wondering).  The two P-51s above are flown by The Horsemen – the world’s only P-51 flight team.  It’s always a thrill to hear those mighty 16 cylinder engines come to life.  It’s a sound not easily forgotten!

For those of you who follow the blog, you already know I am a bit of a car nut, but you may not know that it was actually my love of aviation that brought me down to Florida.  I originally came down to Jacksonville University as a flight student.  Though I changed majors, my love for flying has never diminished.  So, having the opportunity to walk among such beautiful and storied aircraft, not to mention watch them fly, is quite a treat.

Above is a wonderfully restored example of the trainer variant of the Stearman model 75.   The first aircraft most WWII veterans flew, this plane taught countless thousands all the basics of military flying.  This particular Stearman is flown by John Mohr [of Mohr Barnstorming] – who put on a thrilling barnstormer-style display – flying just feet off the ground in a variety of unconventional attitudes.  It was all the more impressive this weekend because of the crazy crosswinds.  He’s truly a talented pilot!
