Sarasota’s Rolling History

Exploring Sarasota Classic Car Museum & Vintage Motors

This past week, we had the pleasure of heading down to Sarasota to photograph a conference for our friends at Firebirds Wood Fire Grill. I had a few hours of down time, and as providence would have it, I stumbled upon an automotive gem hidden a few hundred feet from my hotel. The gem, Sarasota Classic Car Museum, is the second oldest continuously running car museum in the United States, getting its start in 1953 as the century’s send Florida Land Boom was well under way.

The museum features over 75 cars ranging from a meticulously created replica of the horse-drawn hearse which carried the body of President Lincoln, to modern supercars, and a sampling of pretty much everything in between. The museum has several unique concept cars and a collection of limited-run fiberglass-bodied cars from the early days of the craft. Add to that a collection of pre-omputer car-themed arcade games and it’s a unique and fascinating glimpse into automotive’s more obscure history.

Next door is a sort of annex for the cars of the Sarasota Classic Car Museum, at Vintage Motors. In addition to housing about a dozen additional cars from the museum, they offer their own eclectic collection of unique and exotic cars for one’s viewing enjoyment. And, if you’re in the mood to pick up something special, many of the vehicles on display at Vintage Motors are for sale.

If you ever find yourself in the Sarasota area, make a point to set aside a few hours to explore Sarasota Classic Car Museum. You won’t be disappointed! Be sure to check out our full gallery in the Car Culture section of our site.
