Remembering 9/11: The Ghost of Things Past

Eleven years ago, today, I was spending my morning at school – in the process of working through my fine art degree at Jacksonville University.  Bryn and I had been married a little less than a month, and had been back from our honeymoon for only a few weeks when I walked into the Howard building and discovered from a friend at the Registrar’s Office that the World Trade Center towers had been struck by two airliners.

I immediately went home to be with Bryn, who was between jobs at the time, and I remember sitting, staring at the TV for hours and hours as the towers collapsed, a plane hit the Pentagon and another went down in a rural part of Pennsylvania.  I remember just staring at the TV in a daze as reporters began to piece together what had happened and as the reality of just how many lost their lives began to sink in.

And so, today, in remembrance of the lives lost, the families destroyed and the brave acts of so many men and women on that day, I honor you all with this composite image of the Freedom Tower (photographed in late July on our way up to NH) with a faint ghost of the two towers as they stood for 30 years at the gateway to America.

“Now may our Lord Jesus Christ himself, and God our Father, who loved us and gave us eternal comfort and good hope through grace, comfort your hearts and establish them in every good work and word.”
(2 Thessalonians 2:16-17 ESV)

  1. That is a fantastic imagine. I remember where I was too, asleep. But eventually I got up and went to school I was in my first year of high school. My parents were talking about it ‘Probably being Bin Laden again’ but I had no idea who that was.

  2. Paul Daniel says:

I actually know one of the survivors from the Pentagon strike. The stories had has told me are…….not sure how to describe the feeling.
