The above photo (Whaleback Light, New Castle, NH) was taken on one of the coldest mornings of the winter of 2009. The temperature was -5F as the sun began to peek over the Atlantic fog bank. The comparatively warm ocean water (just above freezing) produced all these wonderful whisps of vapor that you see in the foreground. I captured a very similar picture again this winter under the same frigidly glorious conditions!
For most of the US, this has been one crazy-hot summer, with temperatures averaging 5, 10, and even 20 degrees above average in many locations. Now, you may know that Deremer Studios is located in Jacksonville, FL, but what you may not know is that I (Nate) grew up in coastal NH and despite 15 years in Florida, I still have a low tolerance for the heat.
And so, for all you fellow cold-lovers, I wanted to send out a little reminder that summer will one day end and the joys of crisp autumn mornings and white virgin snow is just around the corner. Here’s a selection of some of my favorite winter photos from the past several years. Enjoy – and of course, feel free to download as a desktop wallpaper!
