A Walk Down Summer’s Memory Lane – Sail Portsmouth 2019

With Memorial Day marking the official unofficial start to summer here in The States, we thought it would be a perfect time to share some of our favorite memories from summers-gone-by as we look ahead to all this summer may have in store. Today, we’ll be looking back at last year’s Sail Portsmouth tall ships festival as we look forward to this summer’s event, featuring the CGC Eagle – a ship I haven’t seen in New Hampshire since I was a young child.

Last year’s Sail Portsmouth began with a parade of tall ships, including the Oliver Hazard Perry and the Roseway (above) – navigating their way up the treacherous waters of the Piscataqua River toward their mooring at Portsmouth’s Commercial Fishing Pier. As is often the case in New England – even in the warm days of summer – a dense fog bank had rolled into the area, completely obscuring any view of the ships from New Castle, and requiring me to quickly find a suitable new location to capture the parade. As providence would have it, I found the perfect spot opposite the “Castle” – an imposing and long defunct naval prison on the eastern tip of the Portsmouth Naval Ship Yard. Thankfully, as the morning warmed, the fog bank began to lift as the ships arrived.

With the ships gathering near the Memorial Bridge, I hurriedly grabbed my gear and headed toward Four Tree Island to meet up with Bryn, who was photographing from that location. The speedy relocation was worth it – as I arrived just as the Perry was coming back under the Memorial Bridge and b-lining for the commercial dock (above) where the Sail Portsmouth festival would soon be in full swing.
Needless to say, we are anxiously awaiting this year’s Sail Portsmouth and may even incorporate some drone and on the water photography to provide a novel angle on this year’s great event. The 2019 Sail Portsmouth tall ship festival begins on August 1 with the parade of ships and continues with great activities and opportunities throughout the weekend. We hope to see you there!
