Happy New Year! We thought we would kick things off with a little play on words – Thankfully the sunrise on the first day of 2015 was actually rather spectacular as it rose over Whaleback Light off the coast of New Castle, NH (below). The fowl we referred to is this snowy owl (above), who I’ve been tracking for a few days, trying to get the perfect shot. Coastal New England is not the normal habitat for these arctic birds, but occasionally, what’s called an irruption occurs, where birds go far beyond their normal habitat in search of ample food supplies. With snowy owls, its not uncommon for the birds to then return to the destination of their irruption year after year, as is the case with this pair who first arrived about this time last year.
