A Week in the Life of a Vegetable: Locally Sourced with Southeastern Grocers

Getting to the Roots of Southeastern Grocers’ Locally Sourced Produce

While heat and humidity are not my cup of tea, the warm weather and long days of summer mark prime growing season for locally sourced southern crops.  So, what better time to spend a week touring family-owned farms that provide Southeastern Grocers (BI-LO, Harveys and Winn-Dixie) with fresh, locally sourced produce at prime ripeness.   To add to the excitement, award-winning chef Curtis Stone – a longtime advocate for locally sourced, in-season produce – accompanied the group, along with produce associates from around the company, to learn more about the art of growing produce.  From a squash and zucchini farm in the foothills of South Carolina, to pepper and cucumber farms and a peach orchard in central Georgia – we had a grand time photographing this unique tour for the good folks of Southeastern Grocers!

Despite the sweltering summer heat, it was a true pleasure to spend the week with the fine men and women who work so hard to bring fresh fruits and vegetables to our tables.  It was immensely informative and a grand ol’ time.  Of course, having a Corvette for the week courtesy of Avis didn’t hurt either…  But more on that soon!

Dining Like a King – Bitter Sweet’s Catering Menu

Deremer Studios Jacksonville Culinary & Food Photography

Earlier in December, we had the pleasure of visiting Bitter Sweet Bakery and Eatery for another great photo shoot.  This time, they invited us to photograph a sampling from their delicious and decadent catering menu.  Along the way, we photographed (and ate) some of their amazing breakfast sandwiches and some holiday confections, too.   Check out all the great food, but be warned, you may incur an irresistible craving.

Yum Yum – Shooting with Bitter Sweet Bakery & Eatery

2014 10 Culinary - Bitter Sweet Bakery & Eatery 01 - Cake

A few Saturdays ago, we had the pleasure of stopping by our favorite bakery, Bitter Sweet Bakery and Eatery, and shooting a mini-session to highlight a few of their delectable treats.   Their store, located at the corner of Beach and San Pablo in eastern Jacksonville, offers up a wide variety of pastries, cakes and deserts, as well as a selection of enormous sandwiches.  And of course, the best part of any culinary shoot is the opportunity to eat the subject!  It was a tasty and filling afternoon indeed!

Fresh & Friendly – Jacksonville’s Newest Grocer Opens its Doors

2014 09 Corporate - Fresh Market Grand Opening 03 - Jacksonville Regency Centers

A few weeks ago on the blog, we said goodbye to Fred Cotten’s BBQ, but this week, we get to bring you a happier business story!  On Wednesday, our friend’s at Regency Centers celebrated the grand opening on their anchor store in the new Brooklyn Station shopping center in Jacksonville’s Riverside neighborhood.  The Fresh Market opened it’s door to a big crowd of reporters, stakeholders and excited customers – offering up tasty free samples and some Fresh Market swag.   The grand opening ceremony itself was rather unique, with the cracking (and sharing) of a giant wheel of Parmigiano-Reggiano in lieu of the more traditional ribbon cutting.  The store was beautifully organized, the shelves filled to the brim with fresh produce, groceries, and a bevy of health-conscious items ripe for the picking.

One Last Trip – Saying Farewell to Fred Cotten BBQ

2014 09 Culinary - Farewell Fred Cotten BBQ 01 Last Trip

It’s happened again.  Another famous, historic Jacksonville eatery has been forced to close its doors.  Fred Cotten Bar-B-Que first opened its do0rs in 1946 riding on the wake of the post-war boom and the city’s blossoming shipping industry.  For nearly seven decades, the restaurant, with its famous mustard sauce and fork-tender chicken, has been serving the people of Jacksonville with affordable, award-winning BBQ.  In 2000, after the death of founder Fred Cotten, Billy Cowart purchased the restaurant and faithfully honored the time-tested formula that had made this restaurant such a landmark.  In fact, in its history, the restaurant has been host to a variety of hungry celebrities and politicians on the campaign trail – including this guy you may have heard of – Bill Clinton.  Unfortunately, a combination of population and job shift, the increasing cost of doing business, and difficult financial times meant that Billy C’s Fred Cotten Bar-B-Que had to close its doors this Monday, September 15th, 2014.

And so, when I got word from an old friend (his chest pictured above) that Cotten’s was closing its doors for good, we planned one last trip – camera in hand.  As always, the food was excellent and the atmosphere was just as we had remembered it.  There is just something about BBQ, drenched in mustard sauce and simple white bread to sop up all the saucy, meaty goodness, that you just can’t beat.   And, since this was our last visit and all, I felt it best to share some photos with you!
