A Century in the Wild Blue Yonder: The National Museum of the US Air Force

A Long Walk Through 100+ Years of Air Force History

Remember how we mentioned a visit to the National Museum of the United States Air Force back in our previous post?  Well, with all the hundreds of aircraft on display at the Air Force Museum, we thought it would be appropriate to give the museum its own post.  Way back in 1995 – when I still was still a high-schooler certain of my trajectory toward the Air Force Academy – we visited Dayton on our one and only Continue reading

The Plane! the Plane! 2015 Sea and Sky Spectacular

Little known fact: when I was a child, I really, really, really wanted to be a pilot – I dreamed of flying fighters for the Air Force and even began the lengthy process of applying for the academy.  If it weren’t for my sudden need of glasses, who knows where I would be today.  Yet I was undeterred and headed to college with every intent of becoming a pilot and flying commercially.  However, after a year of flight training, I realized that while I love flying, the appeal of commercial aviation as a career began to wane, and… so here I am today, a professional photographer, writing this post for your enjoyment (or derision if you prefer).

But enough about me.  Let’s talk about this weekend’s Sea and Sky Spectacular at Jacksonville Beach.  Sunday afternoon, after church, we headed out to see the air show – though the weather was less than ideal and threatened rain, the show area managed to stay precipitation-free the entire time.   The show itself was filled with a wonderful variety of performers, from solo acts and formation groups, to historic flights from a couple of P-51 Mustangs and an F4U Corsair, to Fat Albert and the Blue Angels.  Because of all the moisture in the air, the planes were throwing vapor trails left and right, which made for some pretty cool opportunities, like the one above.

The Wild Blue Yonder – 2014 NAS Jacksonville Air Show

2014 10 Aviation - NAS Jacksonville Airshow 12 - P-51 Crazy Horse F-22 Heritage Flight

After an amazing evening photographing a very literally out of this world sunset earlier in the week, we had the pleasure of photographing some objects in lower earth ‘orbit’ at the 2014 NAS Jacksonville Air Show.  With near-perfect weather and a year-long delay, the air show welcomed a record number of aviation enthusiasts, with over 300,000 people estimated to have been in attendance over the weekend.  The air show featured a generous selection of aircraft on static display, from a navy helicopter drone to the massive C-17 Globemaster.  In the air a variety of nationally-recognized stunt pilots amazed spectators with their gravity-defying displays.  There were also a few attractions that never quite left the ground, including a jet powered school bus that belched 200 foot flames, a jet port-a-potty and a speeding snoopy atop his rather fast moving dog house.  But for me, the two neatest highlights were the demonstrations by an F-22 Raptor and the always amazing flying feats of the Blue Angels.

Exploring East: Travels Along the Atlantic States – Air and Space Annex

2013 07 Fine Art Mid Atlantic 25 Air and Space Annex

It’s now been exactly a month since we visited the Air and Space Annex in Dulles, VA, on our way home from New England.  This was our first visit to the annex, and I must say, it was impressive.  Unlike the main museum, the annex is spacious and wide open, with not just small aircraft, but very large examples of aviation milestones.  From the Enola Gay – (the B-29 that dropped the world’s first atomic bomb in combat – shown below, to the Dash-80 (the prototype for the Boeing 707 which introduced the jet engine to commercial flight), you could walk around and on the catwalks above the aircraft to see them from virtually any perspective.

We visited the Annex after spending a few last hours at Gettysburg and the contrast between that battle and the impact of just one aircraft, the Enola Gay, was sobering.  In 1863, it took three days, 170,000 men and an unimaginable number of mini balls and artillery shells to kill less than 10,000.  82 years later, it took one aircraft, with one bomb, just a few seconds to kill an estimated 50,000 people.  What a stunning change in less than a century.

On a more uplifting note, we can make another comparison with the space program.  in 1903, powered flight had yet to be achieved, most people were living on farms and the primary mode of transportation involved horses.  But in just 66 years, we had safely and successfully put men on the moon!  The 20th century, both good and bad, was an amazing time of innovation and progress.

Fine Art Series – Travels North Part 1: The Journey

We recently spent some time in the Northeast, photographing a variety of settings throughout New Hampshire, Pennsylvania and Virginia,  Today’s edition features our journey North.  As the sun rose over New Jersey (and with 16 hours of driving delirium under my belt), we traded seats, and I took to photographing the metropolis as it woke from sleep.  Here are a few of my favorite shots.   Enjoy – and of course, feel free to download as a desktop wallpaper!
