A Warm Afternoon with Four Genuine Shelby Legends

They say imitation is the sincerest form of flattery – and if so, the legendary designs of Carroll Shelby are among the most admired of all time. Today, if you have the resources, you can buy yourself a near-perfect replica of both the Shelby Cobra and Shelby Mustang from a whole slew of companies. But the rare specimens I spent a few days with in late June are no modern-day knock-offs – they are the real McCoy – stunning specimens of the beauty and ingenuity of Shelby and his team.

So, how did we stumble upon these red, white and blue beauties? Our friends at RM Sotheby’s commissioned us to photograph the collection for a few upcoming sales – most notably their Monterey Sale, which will feature the 1965 and 1966 427 Cobras as well as the 1966 Shelby Mustang GT350 Carryover. As with most shoots, I learned a whole lot along the way – from how to discern if a Shelby Mustang is authentic, to the story behind the 1966 Carryover Mustangs. A total of 252 of the 1965 Mustangs would become the highly-coveted 1966 GT350 Carryover cars – 250 were late-run 1965 Mustang K cars (the other 2 1966 prototypes) ordered by Shelby to be retrofitted while the Shelby plant awaited their shipment of 1966 Mustangs.

Perhaps the most enjoyable part of the shoot was our car-to-car session. We’ve created a special rig for our 2012 VW Beetle Turbo to be able to capture these shots reliably and safely – and the combination of sights, sounds and smells, gazing back at such legends from the back of my Bug was quite epic. Our RM Specialist and Shelby expert, Donnie, brought his adult son along to assist in the shoot, and the two worked together flawlessly as Donnie gave chase to us in the bug.
