Damp and Dreary Excitement – The 2017 Rolex 24

Who Needs Forward Visibility When Driving 200MPH at the Rolex 24?

We had the pleasure of returning to the Rolex 24 again this year for the fine folks at Top Gear.  Despite some less than ideal (read downright unpleasant) weather for much of the race, spirits were high and the Rolex 24 was as action-packed as ever – and with record crowds to boot!  With the introduction of a new prototype series, including entrants from the likes of Cadillac, Mazda, and Nissan, anticipation was high as the crowd anxiously awaited the green flag.  Now endurance races are always a gruelling exercise for the teams, but add a hearty helping of cold, damp rain, and it is nothing short of a harrowing experience.  We’ve watched some in-car footage from about hour 10 of the Rolex 24, when the rain was coming down in buckets, and tell you what – those drivers are brave!  Coming down the front stretch at break-neck speeds, the driver couldn’t see the car in front of him at all, despite it only being an handful of feet away.  Even the onboard warning system was having trouble detecting the cars hidden behind their rooster tails.

However, earlier in the day, a few hours before the start of the Rolex 24, conditions couldn’t have been more different.  Part of the weekend festivities included what’s been called the 24 Minutes of Daytona – a showcase of historic endurance racers, put on by HSR.  The group brought along some amazing classic racers, including the Brumos Porsche Carrera RSR that won the 1973 24 Hours of Daytona, as well as the beautiful Shelby Daytona Coupe you see above.  All in all, the Rolex 24 was a feast for the senses and a joy to capture – even if I did get more than a little wet…

A Rainy Inaugural – Cars and Coffee Invades The Avenues

An Epic, Drizzly Beginning to Jacksonville’s Cars and Coffee at The Avenues

With the new year comes all sorts of changes – not least of which was the move of Jacksonville’s Cars and Coffee from the Florida Times Union parking lot to its new location at the Avenues Mall, in Jacksonville’s southside.  The morning proved stupendously dreary, with a lingering fog and sporadic rain showers that you would think would keep many cars tucked safely away in their garages.  Add to that a new location and people recovering from the holidays, and I wouldn’t have been surprised if attendance at Cars and Coffee was less than spectacular.  But I was surprised – with somewhere north of 700 folks bringing their classics and exotics, hardtops and convertibles, priceless gems and ratted out rods – the rain and logistics couldn’t keep all the car nuts from their monthly gathering!   The folks at Automotive Addicts did it again!

Apart from a greater-than-normal amount of umbrellas and a lower-than-usual percentage of convertibles, Cars and Coffee was populated with your usual manifold assortment of automotive eye candy.  Noteworthy vehicles included a super-rare (As in you’re more likely to see Elvis back from the dead than see one of these) McLaren 675LT, as well as not one, but two Volvo 240’s!  Yeah, I know – what’s the big deal about an old Volvo?  For most people, not much, but my first two cars were Volvo 240 station wagons, so you could say I have an affection for them.

Ferrari Mondiali, F1 Invade Daytona

Mega Gallery: Ferrari Mondiali Brings F1 and Much More for Historic Daytona Event

Deremer Studios Motorsports Photography

What’s it sound like when a group of modern Ferrari Formula 1 cars go racing around Daytona for the first time?  Well, in a word… Amazing!  The banshee shriek of the high-revving Ferrari cars echoing through the infield as the cars fly down Daytona’s famous superstretch, was an experience for the senses.  Add to that, the historic significance of F1 cars taking to the high banking of Daytona for the first time ever, and you have a glimpse of what a treat this weekend was.  But that was just the beginning – with races, parties, an auction, and a Ferrari car show going on throughout the weekend.

Deremer Studios Motorsports Photography

Up until Friday afternoon, it wasn’t looking like we were going to be able to attend, but with a bit of work productivity, and speedy help from our friends at Top Gear and Ferrari, we headed south to capture the event!  We’ve included over 50 images of these great Ferrari cars and all the wonderful festivities that represent Ferrari Mondiali.  For this enthusiast, my favorite part of the experience – perhaps second only to the F1 performance – was walking around Saturday evening, as everyone was getting ready for the near record-setting Ferrari parade lap around Daytona.  With most people occupied with final preparations, I had the classic Ferrari display just about to myself – free to enjoy and photograph these storied cars in the beautiful late evening light.  Later, I joined up with the parade group – some 800+ Ferrari strong – and took some time to photograph the cars in the fleeting light.  All in all, it was a truly epic day!

A Feast for the Eyes – November’s Cars and Cofee

Rare Rides and Good Friends at Jacksonville’s Cars and Coffee

Deremer Studios Automotve Photography - Cars and Coffee

Wow!  It’s been a busy couple of weeks here at Deremer Studios, but thankfully we were still able to get out to Jacksonville’s Cars and Coffee this weekend!  After skipping a month thanks to our buddy, Hurricane Matthew, it was nice to see everyone come out yet again for the penultimate Cars and Coffee to be held at the Times Union Building.  The fine folks that put on the show are on the lookout for a new location for the meet-up, beginning in January.  If you’ve got, or know of any locations with 400+ parking spots and a great atmosphere, please let the good folks at Automotive Addicts know.

This month, VW was the featured marquis, with a hearty showing of Golf representing much of the history of the German manufacturer’s storied model – many with a healthy touch of modifications for your drooling pleasure.  Vintage American muscle was also there in force, with a wide range of 60’s and 70’s Corvettes, Mustangs and Firebirds, and the rather splendidly restored Mercury Cougar, above.   The morning was rounded out with some modern muscle, like the ACR Viper, a couple of exotics, and a smattering of modern Euro and Asian rides.  In total, there were about 200 folks that brought their cars out for a morning of shared passion.  Isn’t it nice when we can all come together!

Sunny Side Up Honda – September’s Cars and Cofee

A Bright and Shiny Morning at Jacksonville’s Cars and Coffee

Deremer Studios Automotve Photography - Cars and Coffee

Nothing like a trip to Jacksonville’s Cars and Coffee to start off your Saturday morning!  After a long overdue first visit to Cars and Coffee last month, we made sure to set some time aside in the calendar (between sleep and a Lego build for the kids at Toys-R-Us) to spend the first couple hours of the day with a few hundred car nuts and their beloved four-wheeled children.

Deremer Studios Automotve Photography - Cars and Coffee

This month, Honda brands were the featured marquis, with a large Acura NSX contingent lining the entrance to the Times Union building.  A few other cars that caught my eye were a great example of a well loved American Austin (a domestic version of the Commonwealth’s Austin 7), a beautifully restored Citroën 2CV, a DMC DeLorean complete with its original 1982 tape deck, and a whole gaggle of 1st and 2nd gen Vipers.  Add to that a JSO-liveried BMW M6, a post-apocalyptic-styled mustang, and a drift-modded Nissan 370z, and you have a feel for the amazing array of cars you’ll find from month to month.  You nenver know what you might see!

Up the River with Avis – Exploring Ohio in a Toyota Avalon

An Autumn-esque Adventure in the 2016 Toyota Avalon

Deremer Studios Automotve Photography

While Florida was bracing for Hurricane Hermine, I was helping to liberate a 2016 Toyota Avalon from the path of the storm.  That weekend, I had an event to photograph for one of our automotive clients in Cincinnati, and so we journeyed north with this deep-maroon Toyota Avalaon from Avis to photograph while on our adventure.  Our mission was to capture autumn themed photos.  But what do you do when you need fall photos and fall has yet to arrive?  Take advantage of dusk and dawn – where the sunlight takes on a golden hew and gives even bright green trees a touch of autumn glint.  I’ll let you be the judge of the results.

Deremer Studios Automotve Photography

So, what was it like to put 2,000 miles on a 2016 Toyota Avalon?  To be honest, it was a bit of a mixed bag – especially when you consider that it’s Toyota’s flagship sedan.  As with all Avis cars, the Avalon was nicely equipped, with extras such as a big infotainment display, dual heated seats, rear ventilation, and a sports package, complete with paddle shifters.  Add to that, it was comfortable, smooth, roomy, stylish, and had surprising performance for a car that seems to have been typecast with the ever-dreaded “old person car” moniker.

Deremer Studios Automotve Photography

But there were a few frustrations on the drive as well – most notably the smart phone-based navigation solution that proved anything but…  Unlike Apple Car Play, which our last Avis car, the 2016 Chevy Corvette sported, Toyota employs a third party app called Scout GPS.  Not only did the app fail to connect about 60% of the time – even when it did connect, the navigation information was minimal.  The app offers only turn by turn information, but without standard options like a browsable map (or any map at all – aside from one static map that shows your entire route, reminiscent of the old systems you could used to track your progress on an airliner), lane assistance, or the ability to download offline content.  This proved a big headache – especially in rural areas where our cell signal was often non-existent – but the connectivity issues between the car and the app were just as frustrating.  Beyond my tech frustrations, the fuel economy was also only okay – with highway mileage struggling to get above 31 mpg.  All in all, the car was just that – okay.  There were many nice features, but several issues you just wouldn’t expect from a can in 2016.  In my estimation, Toyota’s attempt to make the Avalon a performance car, a luxury car, and a tech-savvy car, all while keeping it affordable, resulted in a car that doesn’t quite hit the mark in any of those categories.  But then again, if you’re looking for a car that checks off all those boxes with excellence, the price tag’s going to be quite a bit higher.

A Different Sort of Muscle: Jaguars Car Show Invades EverBank Field

Celebrating 4-Wheeled Athletes at the Jaguars Car Show

Deremer Studios Automotve Photography

So, as time allows, we’ve decided to do our part to highlight the amazing car scene here in Jacksonville, FL – such as the Jaguars Car Show from this past weekend.  Sure, Jacksonville is known for our connection to the Navy, being a hub for industries like logistics, banking and healthcare, and of course for having a bridge for each day of the week spanning the St Johns River – but the area is also known for a rather splendid, albeit diverse, car culture.  From the amazing automotive spectacle that is the Amelia Island Concours d’Elegance, to grass roots movements such as the popular Cars and Coffee meetups arranged by Automotive Addicts – Jacksonville is full of folks that have 10W30 with their cereal in the mornings and go to bed with the sounds of throbbing V8s dancing in their heads.  So, it was no surprise to see a great collection of cars at this weekend’s Jaguars Car Show.

Deremer Studios Automotve Photography

Ranging from late model sportscars and exotics, to a vintage Porsche and a race-spec Shelby Mustang – there was something for pretty much anyone – unless you hate cars – but that’s your own fault…  As is often the case, we had a busy Saturday, so our trip to the show was shorter than I would have liked, but it was a great time to catch up with old friends, make a few new ones – and see some great metal!
