Summer Wanderings Part 5: Virginia

The Wild Life and Glowing Skies of Appalachian Virginia

Deremer Studios Fine Art New England Photography

Well, you’ve made it.  Welcome to the penultimate post (#5 of 6) from our summer wanderings series – this time featuring a few of our favorite images from our time in western Virginia.   Not 30 minuets into Virginia, the sun set was absolutely spectacular!  As it set below the western ridge of the Shenandoah Valley, we hopped off the interstate to see if we could find a few rural scenes to photograph before darkness overtook the region.  By chance, we took the exit for Toms Brook, a small farming community that proved the perfect backdrop for a few quick photos, like the one above.

Another first for us was a trip up Interstate 81 to the town of Fort Chiswell, Virginia and its unique and adventurous Animal Park.  Located on 45 acres of rolling hills, the park features a diverse collection of animals for kids of all ages to interact with (just be careful of the grey crowned cranes – they bite photographers when said photographers aren’t paying attention… hypothetically of course).  Included with admission is a safari bus ride, where you can feed everything from a camel to an ostrich – both of which have no qualms about invading your personal space by sticking their heads into the bus in search of treats.  Other species, like the bison and zebra preferred to keep their heads outside the bus, but would still walk right up to be fed.  While we’ve photographed many of these animals in the wild, or at free range parks, there is something very special about being able to look one of these gigantic animals in the eye, just a foot or two from your face.

As always, please feel free to download as many photos as you like – we have sized the photos to 1080P HD wallpaper, perfect for your desktop, laptop, tablet or TV – and if you enjoy our photos, please share this blog with your friends and help us get the word out!

A Night to Remember: A Vibrant Amelia Island Evening

Amelia Island Shows Her True Colors Yet Again

Deremer Studios Fine Art Photography

This weekend, Bryn and I celebrated our 15th wedding anniversary – and naturally, we thought, what better place to celebrate, than Amelia Island.  So, we grabbed the cameras (just in case), hopped in the car, and set off for a romantic dinner for two.  Needless to say, it was a good thing the cameras came along, as it seemed nature wanted to put on a rather grand show.  Even before we got to Amelia Island proper, we stopped just shy of the causeway that connects Big Talbot Island to Amelia Island, our interest piqued by birds that were relaxing in the broad, shallow pond along the edge of the Nassau Sound.  We were surprised to find not only a flock of spoonbills, but also the more elusive white pelicans.  Add to that ducks, egrets and other wading birds, and you had a veritable cornucopia of winged fauna.  Our birding appetite satisfied, we headed onto the island for dinner…

…But, as providence would have it, the thunderstorms off to the west of Amelia Island transitioned from grey and ominous clouds to a pastel collection of oranges, purples, reds and blues as the fleeting rays of the setting sun lit the storms’ anvils on fire.  It made for a truly stunning site, and one we just couldn’t pass up!  So, now on Amelia Island, we ventured out toward the marina and found a spot among the marsh grass to capture the last few moments of light.  Our impromptu photo shoot complete, we finally settled down for dinner at about 8:30 at the wonderful Cafe Karibo.

As it turns out, there was a theme to our night – namely shrimp.  The spoonbills we first encountered have wings tinted pink due to their diet of shrimp.  Likewise was the obvious connection between shrimp and shrimp boats, and finally, our delicious dinner of shrimp and grits from Cafe Karibo.   Hope I don’t turn any more pink…

Chris & Erin’s Beautiful St Johns Country Club Wedding

2013 11 Wedding Erin & Chris 14 St Johns Country Club

This weekend we had the opportunity to shoot Chris and Erin’s wedding at St Johns Golf and Country Club.  If I had to describe the great style they chose, it would be a combination of both rustic and classic elements that came together splendidly – let’s call it high-class rustic!  Be sure to check out all the great details and ideas in the gallery below.

Congrats Chris and Erin!  As always, check out all our favorite photos below!

Randy & Malinda’s Classy Country Wedding

2013 10 Wedding Randy & Malinda 10 Ramona Pavilion

One more post before we close up shot for the night – this is a fun wedding I had the privilege of shooting at the Ramona Pavilion.  Randy and Melinda chose a wonderfully-themed wedding combining the rustic appeal of the country with a classy and informal undertone – and it worked really well.  This themed, combined with lots of great family and friends made for a joyous way to spend a Friday evening!

Congrats Randy and Malinda!  As always, check out all our favorite photos below!

Fine Art Follies – Thanksgiving in Appalachia

2013 06 Fine Art Virginia Thanksgiving 01

If you were wondering just how behind we have become, this post, consisting of photos from a fine art shoot in November, should prove evidence enough!  It was the week after this shoot that we discovered Bryn had breast cancer – and it has been a solid 6 months of business since then.  Thankfully, Bryn’s prognosis is good and we were able to handle a couple large surges in business even with Bryn going through chemo.  The months have been hard but fruitful – a blessing of sorts that we would never have asked for, but are thankful to have experienced.

But I digress.  A bit about the photos: We went up to Abingdon, Virgina just before Thanksgiving to spend some time with family.  As always, I take the opportunity of a trip to explore and shoot some fine art photography.  This time, I focused on the old and dilapidated remains or homes and barns in hill country around Abingdon.  One house that especially struck me was this once grand home, with full porch and substantial size, yet abandoned and falling in.  It makes you wonder why a home is just left and abandoned.  And this was just one of many homes along a short stretch of hilly back road suffering the same fate.  Later on, we took a trip to Bristol Speedway to drive the track and enjoy their massive Christmas light display.  Check out all our favorites from the trip below!

Caleb & Katies Rustic River-side Wedding

2013 05 Caleb & Katie 10

After over two months of non-stop work, we finally have a slower week to catch up on our blog posts – and what better way to get started than to begin with one couple’s new beginning as husband and wife!  We had the wonderful pleasure of capturing Caleb and Katie’s wedding along the banks of the Suwannee River in Branford, FL.   The celebration was full of rustic charm that fit perfectly with the romantic yet relaxed mood of the day.

Congrats Caleb and Katie!  As always, check out all our favorite photos below!

Road Trip – Florida’s Forgotten Highways

It appears that today is fine art catch-up day for Deremer Studios.  This post features a pair of road trips I recently took in conjuntion with shoots.

Back in August, I went out to Destin for a wedding and the next morning, took a day trip along the forgotten roads of Florida.  I stayed overnight in Chattahoochee, FL along the old, venerable US Route 90.  Before the interstate came through in the 1960’s, this was the main road from the Atlantic coast of Florida to the border with Alabama.  It wound through little towns, big cities, and along miles of rural countryside.  There were thriving business, service stations and motels lining the roads from Jacksonville to Alabama.  But that wasn’t to last.  Today, the road is lined with dilapidated and collapsed shells – the only reminder for what once was there – well, except for this restored service station (below) about 10 miles west of Tallahassee.

The other road trip was up to Amelia Island on a pre-sunrise road trip up to a shoot at the Ritz-Carlton.  I always enjoy driving along Heckscher Dr – a 30 mile stretch of road winding along the marshlands, coastal forests, and atop 9 bridges.  Not only was there a gorgeous sunrise, but also a great reward at the end of the drive – a pair of Audi R8s (the V8 version is below).

Enjoy – and of course, feel free to download as a desktop wallpaper!
