Our First Visit to Jacksonville’s Cars and Coffee

A Long Overdue Trip to Cars and Coffee

Deremer Studios Automotve Photography

For being as car crazy as I tend to be, you may be surprised to know that I had yet to visit Cars and Coffee – our city’s monthly gathering of gearheads and their manifold rides along the scenic St Johns river.  After spending this past Saturday morning at Cars and Coffee, I really regret taking so long to finally make it to one!  But alas, past regrets aside, I did manage to bring my camera along and couldn’t resist taking a few – well a few hundred photos…

I was quite pleasantly surprised at the number and diversity of vehicles at Cars and Coffee.  From hot rods to exotics, antiques to modern muscle – the list of cars was all over the board.  Many cars had been nicely restored, many of the modern vehicles had any number of modifications, and there was even a good helping of cars, like my TR6, that were in varying stages of restoration – so I felt right at home.  Though the TR6 is a relatively rare car in the States, I was surprised to discover not one, but two other TR6’s at the meet-up.  All in all, it was a great event, and one I will certainly make an effort to be a part of much more often!

Across the River: An AVIS Mini-Shoot with the 2016 Ford Fusion

Exploring the Southeast in a 2016 Ford Fusion

Deremer Studios Automotve Photography

Last month, we had the pleasure of photographing another vehicle for our friends at Avis – this time a 2016 Ford Fusion.   It was a bit less epic than our 5,600-mile western adventure in a 328i, but with a big blue building, a trip on a ferry, and stunning sunset to boot, I certainly can’t complain!

Deremer Studios Automotve Photography

Our trip with the 2016 Ford Focus included a quick overnight in Atlanta, where I stumbled upon (and may have shopped a bit in) an Ikea.  Once back in Jacksonville, we took to some of my favorite shooting areas on a pretty dreary afternoon.  As day gave way to night, we crossed the St Johns River, at historic Mayport, using the ever-faithful St Johns River Ferry – en route to our favorite little coastal hammock, Amelia Island.   We arrived along the Amelia River just in time for a great sunset, framed by one of the many shrimp boats that helped to put Amelia Island on the map.  All in all, we logged over 700 miles and averages an impressive 34 MPG.

Miles of Chrome: The Cussler Museum

The Cussler Museum is Denver’s Hidden Automotive Gem

Deremer Studios Automotve Photography

While the main reason for our fall trip out west was the stunning natural beauty of our great national parks, I couldn’t fly into Denver without a trip to the Cussler Museum.  Tucked away among the thriving suburbs, in a small commercial park, you would have no idea what a treasure trove of rare and storied cars can be found just on the other side of the door.  With an emphasis on both pre-war coach-built luxury cars and classic American cars from the 50’s, the Cussler Museum provides an extensive collection of truly unique automobiles.

Deremer Studios Automotve Photography

We first encountered Clive Cussler through his fast-paced adventure novels which made the long hours on the road to and from NH fly by.  One of the unique bits of his books that just sucked me in was the descriptions of rare and obscure cars that the protagonist would often find himself in – compiling a substantial collection of rare metal as the series progressed. I’m not sure if fact imitated fiction, or vice versa, but before a trip out to Colorado for an architectural shoot back in 2008, I discovered the Cussler Museum and added it to my itinerary.  Admittedly, I hadn’t had much regard for pre-war cars up until that point, but after taking a few hours to marvel at the sculpted lines and subtle details, I was hooked!  So, with the chance to go back again this past fall, I knew I had to venture once again to the Cussler Museum and show Bryn what all my fuss was about.  It was a great trip!

The Avis Grand Circle Tour – 5,600 Miles in a BMW 328i

Exploring the Highways and Byways of America in a 2016 BMW 328i

Deremer Studios Automotve Photography

Beginning late last month, we had the pleasure of setting out on a 10-day, 5,600-mile road trip, photographing the BMW 328i for the fine folks at Avis.  Our epic trip began in Jacksonville,FL – setting off on a two and a half day, 2,500 mile sprint to Scottsdale, AZ.  We spent a few days in and around Scottsdale, photographing a corporate event for Avis, and then spent four days on a rather circuitous 3,000 mile route back to Jacksonville, hitting several national parks and scenic drives in our BMW 328i along the way.

Deremer Studios Automotve Photography

All in all, the trip was a wonderful adventure – the BMW 328i, as I have come to expect from Avis, was generously equipped with tech and comfort upgrades from the base BMW 328i.  Perhaps the best upgrade was the integrated navigation system that made navigating the cell-coverage-deficient western expanse a breeze.  The BMW 328i provided a great combination of lively performance, comfortable ergonomics, capable tech and frugal fuel economy.  The 240hp Turbocharged Inline 4 was surprisingly peppy – offering a largely lag-free experience, even under hard acceleration.   The posted 0-60 time is just 5.8 seconds – which in itself isn’t a spectacular number, but when combined with the 34.0 mpg combined mileage we recorded (including a generous amount of stop and go, vigorous mountain driving, and ample idling to take photos) it’s a pretty impressive mingling of performance and economy.  The on-board tech was also impressive, with a slew of BMW connected apps, metrics, diagnostic tools, and a powerful real-time GPS system.  As far as comfort goes, the upgraded leather sports seats provided a good balance of support and comfort – even during those long 6-hour, non-stop legs between fill-ups.

Our Drop-Top Chariot on the Roads Out West

Deremer Studios Automotve Photography

While out west, we had the pleasure of receiving a very special upgrade from the folks at Hertz – the perfect vehicle for our Autumn in the National Parks Adventure.  Over the course of ten days, we drove this 2015 Mustang V6 Convertible some 3,000 miles, from hot arid desert (above) to snowy mountain passes (bel0w), from 10,000 foot mountains to endless prairie, from densely populated cities to long stretches of lonely back roads – we even manged to become part of a buffalo herd in Yellowstone!  Needless to say, we got to know the car pretty well.

Deremer Studios Automotve Photography

So, what’s it like compared to other Mustang variants we’ve driven (we’ve now driven the V6, the Ecoboost inline 4, the V8 GT, and the Fisker-Galpin Rocket versions of the car)?  This year, we’ve logged some 4,000 miles in these cars and I have to say, we’ve been impressed across the whole spectrum.  Unlike the Ecoboost Mustang we shot in California, our V6 Mustang wasn’t a premium edition – meaning no heated or cooled seats, no big touch screen, no sporty toggle buttons, no leather…  But to be honest, apart from the odd occasion, it was rare that we missed those upgrades.  The V6 engine, the base offering for the Mustang, seemed to perform about on par with the turbocharged four cylinder EcoBoost engine, though I will say the V6 sounded quite a bit more throaty than it’s more expensive inline-4 brother.  But, while performance wasn’t notably different, fuel economy was – with the V6 eking out 28.6 MPG on our mostly 65MPH route.  The Ecoboost under similar conditions was returning closer to 34 MPG.  But, in the grand scheme of things, getting almost 20 MPG from a 300 HP sports car isn’t too shabby, even for today’s standards.

Deremer Studios Automotve Photography

All in all, the V6 was a pleasant surprise.  Even with the convertible, there was just enough room for one quite large checked suitcase, a carry-on suitcase, a camera bag, and all the fixins’.  And speaking of the convertible, it was a true joy to be able to have the top down as we explored the amazing natural wonders of the parks.  Of course, going from park to park at highway speeds, we kept the top up and found that the road noise, though elevated from the coupe, wasn’t overly loud or distracting.  So, you might ask, would I buy a Mustang?  You bet I would – we’re actually planning to down the road- but which one would I buy?  That’s a harder question – a harder question than I thought it would be…

The Yellow Rocket – A Sunny California Week With Ford’s EcoBoost Mustang

Deremer Studios Automotve Photography

This past week, we had the pleasure of traveling out to California to shoot an event for one of our automotive clients – and with the blue skies and relatively mild, dry temperatures to boot, it was an awesome week!  Adding to the excitement, the fine folks at Avis offered me a free upgrade to the 2015 EcoBoost Mustang you see above – a perfect driving companion for the circuitous mountain roads I would find myself exploring over the coming week.  So, with a fun car in a great color, needless to say I found myself photographing the vehicle quite a bit, including experimenting with a few boom shots (above) and some time exposures (below).

Deremer Studios Automotve Photography

All in all, I was pleasantly surprised by the combination of performance and economy that this car offered – providing me with 33+ MPG on the highway and plenty of get-up-and-go.  Even with a healthy amount of fun with the throttle and lots of carving in the mountains, the car returned a rather astonishing 27.1 MPG average over about 800 miles of driving – which is good when you consider California hasn’t yet gotten the memo that gas prices in the rest of the country are nearly half of what you pay there. Also noticeably improved over previous versions of the Mustang was the rear independent suspension.  Gone are the days of the live axle, and with the improvement, the car tucks into even the sharpest corners with much improved confidence and precision, all-be-it with a little less drama.

Deremer Studios Automotve Photography

As with previous Mustangs, the interior was comfortable and intuitive – offering everything you need for an extended road trip.  Both technology and luxuries in this specific trim were turned up to 11, with Ford’s latest version of Sync displayed on a generously sized touch screen and a surprising list of features you wouldn’t expect to find on a pony car, including heated and vented seats.   So, given the choice between this and the GT, which would I pick you ask?  I’m afraid my desire for power does still outweigh my need for economy, but where the gap between the two was a mile wide prior to this experience, the combination of a lesser impact on my wallet (both purchase price and fuel consumption) as well as the surprising amount of fun the EcoBoost Mustang provides, brought the gap down, to say, maybe 100 yards.

A Rainy day with BMW Drive for Team USA

Deremer Studios Automotve Photography

If you happen to Live in Jacksonville, you know that last week proved rather wet – with thunderstorms sweeping through our area pretty much every day.  And while we needed the rain, it did make for tricky conditions for an impromptu shoot for our friends at BMW. The nation-wide BMW Drive for Team USA event stopped in Jacksonville this past week – the tour features a great lineup of BMW’s, together with comparable cars from the brand’s major competition – all available to test drive.  In addition, for every test drive, BMW is donating $5 to the US Olympic Team – not a bad deal!

All in all, the team putting on the event did a spectacular job adapting to the weather, and a fun time was had by all . As always, please feel free to download as many photos as you like – we have sized the photos to 1080P HD wallpaper, perfect for your desktop, laptop, tablet or TV – and if you enjoy our photos, please share this blog with your friends and help us get the word out!
