A Comcast Soiree and Scooby Too!

2014 09 Corporate - Comcast Spotlight Soiree 12 - Scooby

You know how people talk about coming full circle?  Well this shoot was that sort of experience for me.  As I was looking up the address for our shoot with Comcast Spotlight, it seemed awfully familiar.   And it was.  You see, I am no stranger to 10751 Deerwood Park Blvd.  For seven years, I spent my weekdays fooling around (and occasionally working) as the marketing guy for CEVA Logistics – my cubicle on the third floor.  I made many good friends and even more fond memories there, and when I departed to run Deremer Studios, the parting was bittersweet.  Today, half of the third floor, where CEVA’s executive offices and board room once were, now belongs to Comcast, and  walking into this eerily familiar yet strikingly different space was  a real throwback.

2014 09 Corporate - Comcast Spotlight Soiree 06 - Sweet by Holly
The event itself was great fun.  From a cupcake workshop hosted by Sweet! By Holly, a photo op with the one and only Scooby Do, some crazy indoor drone flying, and a photo session with the guys from Duck Dynasty (in cardboard form) – all came together for a memorable party.  Catering was provided by our friends at Up Catering – and I can personally vouch for the tastiness of their stuffed mushrooms!

More Than Just a Red Carpet – Top Performers Honored at the Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island

2014 09 Corporate - Conference FAM 15 - Ritz-Carlton Amelia Isla

We recently had the pleasure of working with another great group visiting the Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island on a fanciful and noteworthy familiarization trip.   You’ve heard the phrase, “rolling out the red carpet” – well, as illustrated above, the folks at the Ritz-Carlton didn’t settle for just a red carpet – emblazoning this entire ballroom with scarlet tones to honor this intimate gathering of top performers.  As always, we captured our fair share of food pics along the way, and with this group, we offered a special service – quick-turn-around editing, design and printing of a special custom thank you print for the guests.  And on top of that, thanks to some creative Photoshoppery (that’s a word, right?), we even created a special happy birthday print by adding a banner and text to a group photo (their reaction below).   Thanks as always to the resort, and a special thanks to Dan Leslie from Appleseed Photography for partnering with us to provide top-level service at the event!

One Last Trip – Saying Farewell to Fred Cotten BBQ

2014 09 Culinary - Farewell Fred Cotten BBQ 01 Last Trip

It’s happened again.  Another famous, historic Jacksonville eatery has been forced to close its doors.  Fred Cotten Bar-B-Que first opened its do0rs in 1946 riding on the wake of the post-war boom and the city’s blossoming shipping industry.  For nearly seven decades, the restaurant, with its famous mustard sauce and fork-tender chicken, has been serving the people of Jacksonville with affordable, award-winning BBQ.  In 2000, after the death of founder Fred Cotten, Billy Cowart purchased the restaurant and faithfully honored the time-tested formula that had made this restaurant such a landmark.  In fact, in its history, the restaurant has been host to a variety of hungry celebrities and politicians on the campaign trail – including this guy you may have heard of – Bill Clinton.  Unfortunately, a combination of population and job shift, the increasing cost of doing business, and difficult financial times meant that Billy C’s Fred Cotten Bar-B-Que had to close its doors this Monday, September 15th, 2014.

And so, when I got word from an old friend (his chest pictured above) that Cotten’s was closing its doors for good, we planned one last trip – camera in hand.  As always, the food was excellent and the atmosphere was just as we had remembered it.  There is just something about BBQ, drenched in mustard sauce and simple white bread to sop up all the saucy, meaty goodness, that you just can’t beat.   And, since this was our last visit and all, I felt it best to share some photos with you!

That Smokey Goodness – The 2014 Great Southern Tailgate Cookoff

2014 08 Culinary - Great Southern Tailgate Cookoff 14 - Amelia I

After two great food shoots (Re-imagined Shrimp and Grits at the Omni and Salt Cooking School at the Ritz-Carlton, Amelia Island) our August culinary trifecta was culminated by  the two day Great Southern Tailgate Cookoff.   This annual Amelia Island event combines great music, a fair-like atmosphere and some of the best barbeque in the country!   Personally, I’m rather partial to burnt ends – the crispy, melty, smokey end bits of brisket – and this year’s sampling was dangerously addictive.   Even as I write this, my mouth is salivating over the thoughts of those tasty little morsels!  But I digress – I’ve uploaded 35 images for you to peruse in our gallery below – just don’t do so on an empty stomach – as I can’t be held responsible for the outcomes.   If you try to eat your monitor, it’s your own fault…

Reimagining a Southern Classic – Shrimp and Grits at the Omni Amelia Island

2014 08 Culinary - Omni Shrimp and Grits 08 Amelia Island

For a guy that loves food (too much), August has been pretty spectacular.  We had the pleasure of photographing the Salt Cooking School, The Great Southern Tailgate Cookoff, and this fun little shoot with the Omni Amelia Island Plantation.  Executive Chef Daven Wardynski prepared a stunning rendition of the classic southern staple, shrimp and grits.  Be sure to take a look at our slideshow to see this great dish come together!
