A Country Christmas Part 1: The Holidays in Appalachia

You Don’t Always Get a Snowy Christmas in Appalachia

Over the Christmas break, we found our way to two of our favorite shooting areas, the southern mountains of Appalachia and the rugged seacoast of New England.  Over the course of our trip, we took several excursions to a variety of locations, some new to us and others old and familiar.  We began our photo adventure by exploring Appalachia – specifically southwestern Virginia and eastern Tennessee.  As part of a family trip, we headed to Pigeon Forge for our first-erver trip to Dollywood.  Though we didn’t bring in the big cameras, our faithful ol’ waterproof Sony provided a handy way to document this colorful piece of Christmas in Appalachia (above).

While in Virginia, we took to the back roads and forgotten paths of the region in search of new vignettes to photograph.  While exploring this corner of Appalachia, we visited a grand waterfall, found some great farm scenes on a foggy afternoon, and stumbled upon this old slat barn (above), just as the sun was setting in the hollow.  You never quite know what you’re going to find when you set out to explore – but you seldom return home empty handed.   Such was the case with our last Appalachia excursion of the visit, as we summited White Top Mountain and did some hiking in search of the perfect shot.  As you can see from the photos in the gallery below, the cloud lawyer was a few hundred feet below the summit, filling the valley like a picturesque quilt of fluffy cotton.

As always, please feel free to download as many photos as you like – we have sized the photos to 1080P HD wallpaper, perfect for your desktop, laptop, tablet or TV – and if you enjoy our photos, please share this blog with your friends and help us get the word out!

A Very Autumn New England Winter – With a Side of Snow

New England Winter at its Awkwardest!

Deremer Studios Fine Art Photography

If you’ve been following the news at all, you probably know that this winter has been a bit… well… mild in New England.  In fact this year’s New England winter had been downright non-existent, with early autumn temperatures visiting us as late as the last week of December.  In fact, when we arrived in New Hampshire for our annual winter visit, the weather was so warm that we were out building a stick fort with the kids in shorts an t-shirts.  Though fun, it wasn’t exactly what we were hoping for. But, on the bright side, the unseasonably warm New England winter did have some advantages – for example, not suffering from frostbite on a pre-dawn Nubble Light shoot (above).  Plus, it has been years and years since I’d built a stick fort, so that was a nice walk down memory lane to share with the kids.

However, at long last, the jet stream dipped and a cold front came through, bringing that long-awaited first snow just before the New Year.  In Greenland, NH, about 5 miles from the ocean, we got about 6 inches of sometimes fluffy, sometimes wet snow.  Just enough for constructing our annual snow fort with the kids.  On our final day in New England, as we were packing for the long drive south, the sun had finally come out and with it, a beautiful sunburst shining through the dripping, misty trees.  The photo above is from just outside our door, with the Winnicut River slowly flowing along its banks as the night’s ice slowly melted.  Of course, this New England winter is far from over,  but if December was any indication of what is to come, perhaps this New England winter will be a bit more tolerable than the unceasing snows of the previous winter season.

Merry Christmas from your Friends at Deremer Studios!

2014 12 Merry Christmas from Deremer Studios

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and a Wonderful New Year!

Christmas has always held a special place in our hearts – from Nate’s memories of snowy New England Christmasses, filled with family and strawberry-topped waffles, and stockings and sledding in the back yard – to Bryn’s memories of Christmas in North Dakota and then in Florida – the windy snowdrifts contrasted by the sandy dunes – Christmas Eve services, and big family meals.

At the center of our Christmas traditions is the miraculous birth of Jesus, who willingly laid down his rights as God and took on the frail and broken form of humanity.  As we celebrate Christ’s birth – his taking on of human flesh – we remember, too, the reason for his coming – to seek and to save a people by his perfect life and sinless death.  He came to bring us hope – a certain hope that the frigid and bleak effects of the curse – it’s sorrows and sufferings – the brokenness we see in this world, and in our own hearts – will one day be no more.  In his incarnation, Christ inaugurated the coming of a kingdom without end – the promise of eternal, perfect joy and peace flowing from the presence of God among his ransomed people.   The invitation of Christmas is found at the foot of the cross – it is a call to lay down all our frustrations and struggles and sins at Christ’s feet – a call to trade in the overwhelming desires of life that will inevitably fail us, and instead embrace Christ’s gift of life – his gift of himself as our all-surpassing joy and worth.   This is the Christmas gift that beats out every other gift, even that gigantic die-cast Voltron I received that one Christmas…

And as we look to the New Year, we’ve compiled a small Christmas gift for you – a collection of our favorite Fine Art wallpaper from 2014 – a retrospective if you will.  Please feel free to download one or all!  The images are full HD images, 1080P, and perfect for your computer, tablet or television – and if you enjoy our photos, please follow us – and for extra bonus points, share this blog with your friends to help us get the word out!

Christmas on Amelia Island – Candlelight Caroling at Fort Clinch

Deremer Studios Fine Art Photography

With Christmas literally right around the corner, and with lots of blog posts yet to be posted, I thought what better way to get posting than to highlight a shoot we did for our friends at Amelia Island for the holidays!  On the northern tip of the island is a beautiful Civil-War era fort, named Fort Clinch.  On the first Saturday of December, the folks at Fort Clinch welcome the public to participate in some great 1860’s-era caroling under the stars.  With a raging bonfire and voices raised high, we sang a wealth of pre-1860 carols as the moon rose over the canon-lined ramparts.  Along with the period singing, this immersive walk into 1860’s holiday living included a variety of living displays, depicting the joys and traditions of a Civil War era Christmas.    This will definitely be a tradition for the Deremer Household for years to come!

Stephani & Jonathan’s Transatlantic Wedding

2013 12 Wedding - Stephani & Jonathan 17 University Club

After a plethora of fine art shoots, I thought it might be good to change things up a bit.  We had the pleasure of shooting the gorgeous wedding of Stephani and Jonathan between Christmas and the new year.  Through unlikely circumstances, Jonathan, from the UK, and Stephani, from Jacksonville met online and not even the mighty Atlantic could keep them apart!  And so, family from ‘across the pond’ joined Stephani’s family here in Jacksonville for their wonderful ceremony – and if you take a peak at the slideshow – you’ll see there was no lack of humor or joy during their special day.

Congrats Stephani & Jonathan!  As always, check out all our favorite photos below and if you like what you see, please share our blog with others!

Amelia Island Adventures: Timoti’s and the Holiday Cookie Tour

2013 11 Event B&B Holiday Cookie Tour 02 Timoti

They say it isn’t a good idea to mix work and pleasure, but, at least on this occasion, I would beg to differ!  The weekend before Thanksgiving we had the pleasure of shooting a few photos for our friends at AmeliaIsland.com while enjoying the day on the island with some old friends.  Bryn and I left the kids behind and took a leisurely drive up to Timoti’s Seafood Shack for an early lunch before the B&B Holiday Cookie Tour.   This great little restaurant in Downtown Fernandina always has great seafood (pictured above) and on a bright, sunny, cool autumn day, the outdoor picnic tables offered the perfect setting to enjoy our meal.

2013 11 Event B&B Holiday Cookie Tour 07

Shortly after our meal, we met up with Justin and Jill to spend the afternoon exploring several of the great Bed and Breakfasts Amelia Island has to offer.  The Amelia Island Holiday Cookie Tour, a much-anticipated annual event on the island, offers guests the opportunity to explore these great old Bed and Breakfasts decked out in all their Christmas splendor.  This is the second year we have covered the event (see last year’s highlights here).  While touring the B&B’s, we also snapped a few photos of Justin and Jill, who are expecting their first child early next year.

All in all, it was a wonderful day full of food, friends and great holiday spirit!  As always, feel free to download any or all of the images for use as desktop wallpaper!  Enjoy!
