Up the River with Avis – Exploring Ohio in a Toyota Avalon

An Autumn-esque Adventure in the 2016 Toyota Avalon

While Florida was bracing for Hurricane Hermine, I was helping to liberate a 2016 Toyota Avalon from the path of the storm.  That weekend, I had an event to photograph for one of our automotive clients in Cincinnati, and so we journeyed north with this deep-maroon Toyota Avalaon from Avis to photograph while on our adventure.  Our mission was to capture autumn themed photos.  But what do you do when you need fall photos and fall has yet to arrive?  Take advantage of dusk and dawn – where the sunlight takes on a golden hew and gives even bright green trees a touch of autumn glint.  I’ll let you be the judge of the results.

So, what was it like to put 2,000 miles on a 2016 Toyota Avalon?  To be honest, it was a bit of a mixed bag – especially when you consider that it’s Toyota’s flagship sedan.  As with all Avis cars, the Avalon was nicely equipped, with extras such as a big infotainment display, dual heated seats, rear ventilation, and a sports package, complete with paddle shifters.  Add to that, it was comfortable, smooth, roomy, stylish, and had surprising performance for a car that seems to have been typecast with the ever-dreaded “old person car” moniker.

But there were a few frustrations on the drive as well – most notably the smart phone-based navigation solution that proved anything but…  Unlike Apple Car Play, which our last Avis car, the 2016 Chevy Corvette sported, Toyota employs a third party app called Scout GPS.  Not only did the app fail to connect about 60% of the time – even when it did connect, the navigation information was minimal.  The app offers only turn by turn information, but without standard options like a browsable map (or any map at all – aside from one static map that shows your entire route, reminiscent of the old systems you could used to track your progress on an airliner), lane assistance, or the ability to download offline content.  This proved a big headache – especially in rural areas where our cell signal was often non-existent – but the connectivity issues between the car and the app were just as frustrating.  Beyond my tech frustrations, the fuel economy was also only okay – with highway mileage struggling to get above 31 mpg.  All in all, the car was just that – okay.  There were many nice features, but several issues you just wouldn’t expect from a can in 2016.  In my estimation, Toyota’s attempt to make the Avalon a performance car, a luxury car, and a tech-savvy car, all while keeping it affordable, resulted in a car that doesn’t quite hit the mark in any of those categories.  But then again, if you’re looking for a car that checks off all those boxes with excellence, the price tag’s going to be quite a bit higher.

Across the River: An AVIS Mini-Shoot with the 2016 Ford Fusion

Exploring the Southeast in a 2016 Ford Fusion

Deremer Studios Automotve Photography

Last month, we had the pleasure of photographing another vehicle for our friends at Avis – this time a 2016 Ford Fusion.   It was a bit less epic than our 5,600-mile western adventure in a 328i, but with a big blue building, a trip on a ferry, and stunning sunset to boot, I certainly can’t complain!

Our trip with the 2016 Ford Focus included a quick overnight in Atlanta, where I stumbled upon (and may have shopped a bit in) an Ikea.  Once back in Jacksonville, we took to some of my favorite shooting areas on a pretty dreary afternoon.  As day gave way to night, we crossed the St Johns River, at historic Mayport, using the ever-faithful St Johns River Ferry – en route to our favorite little coastal hammock, Amelia Island.   We arrived along the Amelia River just in time for a great sunset, framed by one of the many shrimp boats that helped to put Amelia Island on the map.  All in all, we logged over 700 miles and averages an impressive 34 MPG.

The Avis Grand Circle Tour – 5,600 Miles in a BMW 328i

Exploring the Highways and Byways of America in a 2016 BMW 328i

Deremer Studios Automotve Photography

Beginning late last month, we had the pleasure of setting out on a 10-day, 5,600-mile road trip, photographing the BMW 328i for the fine folks at Avis.  Our epic trip began in Jacksonville,FL – setting off on a two and a half day, 2,500 mile sprint to Scottsdale, AZ.  We spent a few days in and around Scottsdale, photographing a corporate event for Avis, and then spent four days on a rather circuitous 3,000 mile route back to Jacksonville, hitting several national parks and scenic drives in our BMW 328i along the way.

All in all, the trip was a wonderful adventure – the BMW 328i, as I have come to expect from Avis, was generously equipped with tech and comfort upgrades from the base BMW 328i.  Perhaps the best upgrade was the integrated navigation system that made navigating the cell-coverage-deficient western expanse a breeze.  The BMW 328i provided a great combination of lively performance, comfortable ergonomics, capable tech and frugal fuel economy.  The 240hp Turbocharged Inline 4 was surprisingly peppy – offering a largely lag-free experience, even under hard acceleration.   The posted 0-60 time is just 5.8 seconds – which in itself isn’t a spectacular number, but when combined with the 34.0 mpg combined mileage we recorded (including a generous amount of stop and go, vigorous mountain driving, and ample idling to take photos) it’s a pretty impressive mingling of performance and economy.  The on-board tech was also impressive, with a slew of BMW connected apps, metrics, diagnostic tools, and a powerful real-time GPS system.  As far as comfort goes, the upgraded leather sports seats provided a good balance of support and comfort – even during those long 6-hour, non-stop legs between fill-ups.

The Yellow Rocket – A Sunny California Week With Ford’s EcoBoost Mustang

Deremer Studios Automotve Photography

This past week, we had the pleasure of traveling out to California to shoot an event for one of our automotive clients – and with the blue skies and relatively mild, dry temperatures to boot, it was an awesome week!  Adding to the excitement, the fine folks at Avis offered me a free upgrade to the 2015 EcoBoost Mustang you see above – a perfect driving companion for the circuitous mountain roads I would find myself exploring over the coming week.  So, with a fun car in a great color, needless to say I found myself photographing the vehicle quite a bit, including experimenting with a few boom shots (above) and some time exposures (below).

Deremer Studios Automotve Photography

All in all, I was pleasantly surprised by the combination of performance and economy that this car offered – providing me with 33+ MPG on the highway and plenty of get-up-and-go.  Even with a healthy amount of fun with the throttle and lots of carving in the mountains, the car returned a rather astonishing 27.1 MPG average over about 800 miles of driving – which is good when you consider California hasn’t yet gotten the memo that gas prices in the rest of the country are nearly half of what you pay there. Also noticeably improved over previous versions of the Mustang was the rear independent suspension.  Gone are the days of the live axle, and with the improvement, the car tucks into even the sharpest corners with much improved confidence and precision, all-be-it with a little less drama.

Deremer Studios Automotve Photography

As with previous Mustangs, the interior was comfortable and intuitive – offering everything you need for an extended road trip.  Both technology and luxuries in this specific trim were turned up to 11, with Ford’s latest version of Sync displayed on a generously sized touch screen and a surprising list of features you wouldn’t expect to find on a pony car, including heated and vented seats.   So, given the choice between this and the GT, which would I pick you ask?  I’m afraid my desire for power does still outweigh my need for economy, but where the gap between the two was a mile wide prior to this experience, the combination of a lesser impact on my wallet (both purchase price and fuel consumption) as well as the surprising amount of fun the EcoBoost Mustang provides, brought the gap down, to say, maybe 100 yards.
