A Country Christmas Part 1: The Holidays in Appalachia

You Don’t Always Get a Snowy Christmas in Appalachia

Over the Christmas break, we found our way to two of our favorite shooting areas, the southern mountains of Appalachia and the rugged seacoast of New England.  Over the course of our trip, we took several excursions to a variety of locations, some new to us and others old and familiar.  We began our photo adventure by exploring Appalachia – specifically southwestern Virginia and eastern Tennessee.  As part of a family trip, we headed to Pigeon Forge for our first-erver trip to Dollywood.  Though we didn’t bring in the big cameras, our faithful ol’ waterproof Sony provided a handy way to document this colorful piece of Christmas in Appalachia (above).

While in Virginia, we took to the back roads and forgotten paths of the region in search of new vignettes to photograph.  While exploring this corner of Appalachia, we visited a grand waterfall, found some great farm scenes on a foggy afternoon, and stumbled upon this old slat barn (above), just as the sun was setting in the hollow.  You never quite know what you’re going to find when you set out to explore – but you seldom return home empty handed.   Such was the case with our last Appalachia excursion of the visit, as we summited White Top Mountain and did some hiking in search of the perfect shot.  As you can see from the photos in the gallery below, the cloud lawyer was a few hundred feet below the summit, filling the valley like a picturesque quilt of fluffy cotton.

A River Runs Through It – Cincinnati and the Mighty Ohio

Exploring the Ohio River Basin

Deremer Studios Fine Art Photography

It’s a good idea to be prepared for anything – like a delayed flight, or your car breaking down, or who knows what…  That’s why we always plan a buffer day in our business travel – allowing us to get in and settled with a day before our shoot.  It also affords us time to scout the area if needed, and then there’s the other reason we love to have an extra day – to explore and shoot fine art photography!  Such was the case when we headed to Cincinnati with one of our clients a few weeks back.  Thankfully, travel went great, and we had a whole day to explore Ohio.  Here’s a sampling of our favorite fine art shots from the trip!

Deremer Studios Fine Art Photography

Over the years, we haven’t spent much time in Ohio.  In fact, I think this was only my third time in the state – which, of course, is all the more reason to explore.  And explore we did – setting out from Cincinnati, exploring rural Ohio as the sun rose, setting off to the National Air Force Museum in Dayton, and then heading down to Portsmouth, OH, along the banks of the Ohio River.  From there, we chased the setting sun, traveling west along the shore, hopping back and forth between Ohio and Kentucky on our way back to Cincinnati.  It was a wonderful day of exploring a part of the country I haven’t really experienced before.  What surprised me the most?  Probably the Ohio River itself.  It was bigger than I expected, and with far fewer crossings than I would have thought.  It was tricky enough to get from one side to the other today – I can only imagine the barrier it was to commerce and travel 100 years ago!

Summer Wanderings Part 6: Tennessee

Exploring the Underbelly of Eastern Tennessee

Deremer Studios Fine Art New England Photography

It’s official – we’ve finally buckled down to give you that final post from our summer adventures – featuring Tennessee!  We didn’t spend a lot of time in Tennessee on this trip – in fact, we the only time we spent shooting in Tennessee was underneath it!  Way back in 2009, we first visited Bristol Caverns, and we thought it was high time to make another visit.  The cavern system was first discovered by the indigenous people of the region, and was used as both storage and refuge for the tribe’s raiding parties during the colonial period.  Fast forward a few centuries, and the cave was equipped with concrete paths and steps – even a bridge – and opened to the public for regular tours.

On our visit, some 70 years after the first public tours began, we took the whole family along for our spelunking adventure.  The caves, carved out of the Tennessee limestone, offer an easy way to explore the cavernous spaces and amazing formations, without having to squeeze through skinny spots or contort yourself into pretzel-like shapes to traverse the cave system.  There are several sections open to the public via guided tour – with another section three times as large as the current area, being prepared for future tours.  The cave even has a stream running through its lower depths, complete with sundry wildlife.

Summer Wanderings Part 5: Virginia

The Wild Life and Glowing Skies of Appalachian Virginia

Deremer Studios Fine Art New England Photography

Well, you’ve made it.  Welcome to the penultimate post (#5 of 6) from our summer wanderings series – this time featuring a few of our favorite images from our time in western Virginia.   Not 30 minuets into Virginia, the sun set was absolutely spectacular!  As it set below the western ridge of the Shenandoah Valley, we hopped off the interstate to see if we could find a few rural scenes to photograph before darkness overtook the region.  By chance, we took the exit for Toms Brook, a small farming community that proved the perfect backdrop for a few quick photos, like the one above.

Another first for us was a trip up Interstate 81 to the town of Fort Chiswell, Virginia and its unique and adventurous Animal Park.  Located on 45 acres of rolling hills, the park features a diverse collection of animals for kids of all ages to interact with (just be careful of the grey crowned cranes – they bite photographers when said photographers aren’t paying attention… hypothetically of course).  Included with admission is a safari bus ride, where you can feed everything from a camel to an ostrich – both of which have no qualms about invading your personal space by sticking their heads into the bus in search of treats.  Other species, like the bison and zebra preferred to keep their heads outside the bus, but would still walk right up to be fed.  While we’ve photographed many of these animals in the wild, or at free range parks, there is something very special about being able to look one of these gigantic animals in the eye, just a foot or two from your face.

Essence of Summer Part 6: In Panorama

Deremer Studios Fine Art Photography

What better way to summarize our trip than to share with you a collection of our favorite panoramas from our Essence of Summer collection.  In total, we spent the better part of a month on the road – with corporate shoots in Atlanta, fine art shoots in North Carolina, Virginia, New Hampshire and Maine, and some much needed R&R with both sides of our family.  We had the opportunity to photograph a wide variety of settings and subjects, from loons, mergansers and moose, to tall ships and living history, to rainbows, thunderstorms, and spectral sunsets.  All in all, it felt like a pretty productive trip, though I will say that the new camera’s gigantic file size did make for slow going while editing images on the road.  In the next few weeks, you’ll see many of the photos from these posts appear on our fine art site, and should you want to purchase any of our affordably priced prints, you are welcome to drop us a line.  We hope you enjoyed joining us on our adventure and we plan to keep you up to date on new fine art projects from time to time.

Essence of Summer Part 5 – Barns and Bails

Deremer Studios Fine Art New England Photography

As we wrapped up our Essence of Summer tour, we began winding our way along the spine of the Appalachians, driving south from New Hampshire to Virginia, and then, finally, home to Florida.  In Virginia we stopped a few days to spend time with family, and I found a moment or two to once again explore the beautiful country surrounding Abingdon, VA.  On one shoot, I admittedly had some trouble finding the sort of special vignettes I was looking for.  As day gave way to night, and after several hours of exploring, I still hadn’t found much that peaked my interest – that was until the last moments of light set the sky ablaze and a providential turn down just one more road led me to the scene you see above (and in the gallery below).

Also on the trip, we went out to visit the Muster Grounds just south of Downtown Abingdon, VA.  This past weekend was the town’s Virginia Highlands Festival, and one of the neat offerings was a living history exhibit at the grounds, where a rag tag band of nearly 400 frontiersmen decided to take the battle to the British in 1780 – eventually resulting in the decisive victory over British Major Ferguson’s regulars at Kings Mountain on October 7, 1780.   We learned much about what life would have been like on the frontier and in revolutionary-era battles, and while I did wax just a bit nostalgic, I left feeling thankful I live in the 21st century.

Essence of Summer Part 1: Sunset Glories

Deremer Studios Fine Art Appalachia Photography

As a New Englader, Florida summers are, in a word, torture.  And so, as the temperatures rise, we do our best to take to the road and plot a course north for a few weeks of fine art photography.   That means, over the next few weeks, we’ll be uploading some of our favorite photos from our recent adventure for your viewing and downloading pleasure.  We’re calling this collection Essence of Summer.  Stay with us!

Tonight’s post is mostly from an excursion up to one of my favorite places in the world – White Top Mountain, in extreme western Virginia.  With big boomers to the northeast and some clouds between me and the sun, I wasn’t sure what I would get, but the trip proved rewarding, offering up probably the most stunning sunset I have experienced up on the mountain.  And, as an extra added bonus, I discovered that the path I wander down to shoot these images is actually a little known trail locals like to call the ‘AT’.  So, that means I can say I hike the Appalachian Trail a few times a year, right?  It might be the same 100 yards, but hey, at least it’s something…

I also have to give a big shout out to Enterprise Rent-A-Car.  The company proved a gigantic life saver.  While visiting Virginia, we had two automotive shoots down in Atlanta – so I had reserved a vehicle to pick up part of the way up to VA, so that I could drive directly to Atlanta and the family could continue to our destination.  Unfortunately, after several hours on the phone, we discovered the company with which we had reserved a car not only did not have the type of car we had reserved, but didn’t have a single vehicle available to rent…in the entire tri-city region!  Thankfully, the folks at Enterprise were more than happy to help, and put me in a great Elantra (above) at a better rate – and did so with 30 minutes notice!
