Autumn in the National Parks – In Panorama

Deremer Studios Fine Art Photography

After 10 days of travel, 3,000 miles, 4,200 photos and over a month of editing, we’ve finally arrived at our last post from our Autumn in the National Parks Collection.  Over the course of our trip, we also photographed 142 ultra-high resolution panoramas – most in excess of 100 megapixels.  The national parks, with their wide open vistas and expansive views lend themselves perfectly to the medium of panorama – offering a unique perspective on the parks that better represents the true scale of the subject in a way that even the best conventional photos can seldom do.  So, without further adieu, here’s about 40 of our favorite Panoramas, offering a sort of summary of an amazing, breathtaking, glorious tour of our nation’s crown jewels!

Deremer Studios Fine Art Photography - Out West

Here in Florida, without towering mountains, but replete with tall trees, it’s hard to get a panoramic sense of distance, yet out west the opposite is true, and vistas such as Bryce Canyon (top) and the Grand Tetons (above) lend themselves perfectly to the medium.  Below, I tried my hand at some panoramic astrophotography in Arches – that’s the aptly named Ham Rock in the foreground.  Over the last decade, stitching software has come a long way.  When we first got started, I stitched everything manually in Photoshop.  I took forever and the amount of airbrushing required to bring it to a professional level was rather tedious and slow.  But today, with the built-in panorama capabilities of Adobe Lightroom, I am able to stitch even wide angle images with ease, all while maintaining their raw characteristics.   There’s still some tweaking in Photoshop, but nothing like when we first got started.

Essence of Summer Part 6: In Panorama

Deremer Studios Fine Art Photography

What better way to summarize our trip than to share with you a collection of our favorite panoramas from our Essence of Summer collection.  In total, we spent the better part of a month on the road – with corporate shoots in Atlanta, fine art shoots in North Carolina, Virginia, New Hampshire and Maine, and some much needed R&R with both sides of our family.  We had the opportunity to photograph a wide variety of settings and subjects, from loons, mergansers and moose, to tall ships and living history, to rainbows, thunderstorms, and spectral sunsets.  All in all, it felt like a pretty productive trip, though I will say that the new camera’s gigantic file size did make for slow going while editing images on the road.  In the next few weeks, you’ll see many of the photos from these posts appear on our fine art site, and should you want to purchase any of our affordably priced prints, you are welcome to drop us a line.  We hope you enjoyed joining us on our adventure and we plan to keep you up to date on new fine art projects from time to time.

When Life Gives You Lemons, Take Pictures of Downtown Jacksonville

Deremer Studios Fine Art Photography

Last night’s sunset over Downtown Jacksonville was a providential surprise that made for an awesome photography opportunity – one I could not pass up!  Yesterday evening, we were scheduled to photograph a building in downtown Jacksonville, but due to an administrative issue at the facility, I found myself in Downtown Jacksonville with nothing to shoot.  But after looking to the sky, I knew what I had to do!  Paper-thin cirrus clouds were sweeping through the area as the sun began to set, and that almost always means a stunning sunset.  So, I headed down to the Southbank and we setup shop for a few hours as afternoon gave way to sunset and then to night.  The display was truly spectacular!

Big News – Introducing Deremer Studios Fine Art Photography Website!

2014 08 Fine Art Site - Deremer Studios Fine Art 0 Main

We’ve got some big news for you – we’ve just unveiled our latest project – the Deremer Studios fine art photography website.  It’s actually a bit like we’re coming full circle – back in 2002 when the seeds of Deremer Studios were just beginning to take shape, the business was built around fine art photography and the first component of deremerstudios.com was actually a fine art collection.  In fact, we’ve got what we call our ‘heritage site’ still out there if you drill down through deremerstudios.com.  While it was pretty cutting edge for 2002, the site is clearly quite dated and hadn’t been updated in a decade, so here we are, with a brand new site from scratch courtesy the WordPress framework and a great theme from Themeforest.  Add a couple of days of tweaking, playing with the code and a heaping helping of frustration, and you’ve got the site you see today.

And, I’ll let you in on a little secret – this new layout and all its full screen HD goodness is the template for an eventual rebrand of our whole suite of sites!  So, if you are keen on a bit of crowd-feedback, I would love to hear what you like, what you don’t, how things perform and all of that sort of stuff to help us make your experience the best it can be.   We hope you enjoy the Deremer Studios Fine Art Photography Website!

The Summer Adventure: Fine Art Panoramas from our Travels

2014 07 Fine Art Panorama - Summer Trip 02 Great Bay NH Foggy Sunset Newicks

The blog has been a bit scatter-brained over the past month, with no particular order – so why change, right?  Today we are featuring several of our ultra-high resolution 100 megapixel fine art panoramas from our recent photo expeditions.  Above is one of our favorite panoramas from a foggy evening shoot in Dover Point, NH, just outside of the great local seafood restaurant, Newick’s.  That evening proved an absolutely stunning display of glory and we were able to capture several panoramas as day gave way to night.  While in Virginia, we visited one of our favorite locations, White Top Mountain (below) and despite never fully seeing the sun as it set, the low cloud layer and never-ending layers of ridges made for some pretty panoramas all the same.

Memorial Bridge – Rediscovering a 90 Year Old Panorama

So, I’ve always been a big history fan.  Recently, this has manifested itself in a borderline obsession with the Memorial Bridge, in Portsmouth, NH.  In researching the building of the bridge at The Portsmouth Athenaeum’s website, I found a large archive of photos from the construction process (see the video I created below from 1920’s news reel and photos during the construction of the bridge).   But what really peaked my interest was a series of 6 photos, taken from the same vantage point (the top of the North Tower) and seeming to have been designed to be displayed together in a primitive sort of panorama.

And that got me wondering – would it be possible to stitch these 90 year old photos together into a modern panorama?  First, I tried our commercial stitching program, but due to slight differences in the images and limited overlap, it wasn’t coming together as I hoped.  So much for the easy way!  But by this point I was determined – and started to stitch the photos together manually using Photoshop.  After about an hour, I had a pretty presentable final product (above).

I still get a kick out of the idea that 90 year old images, taken with a comparatively rudimentary camera, were able to be turned into a modern panorama.  Pretty exciting stuff – Enjoy!
