Photo of the Day: Look Out Below!!!

So, it seems this photo of the day thing is becoming more common…

Above is a photo I snapped while headed back from a commercial shoot is South Florida.  Part of the shoot was out in the Everglades, so we decided to take Rt 27 North to Lake Okeechobee.  On the way out from the lake, I saw this plane diving down toward the road at an alarming angle.  Thankfully, I recognized the body style as a crop duster, so I didn’t have a heart attack, crash, burn and die.

Instead, I pulled over, and started snapping away as the plane did a circling pattern over our heads.  Enjoy!

Freebie HD Wallpaper – Washington & The Smithsonian!

Well, all good things must come to an end.  Unfortunately, that’s true for fine art photo adventures as well.  On our way back from our time in New England, we took a half day to do a whirlwind tour of DC.  In the 5 hours we were there, we visited the Capitol, Civil War Memorial, Air and Space Museum, and the Museum of Natural History.   Here’s a selection of our favorite photos from the trip!

Above is a photo of some bird (I have a really good memory).  Despite being perched on a branch, it is actually no longer living.  To the right is a really cool piece of history for a guy that loves both photography and aviation.  This is the actual camera used to photograph the Wright Brothers’ first flight.  All those famous pictures you’ve seen of those first flights were taken with this very camera!  Pretty cool stuff.

Below is one more photo from the session.  In focus is the legendary Bell X-1, the first aircraft to exceed the speed of sound (in level flight) way back in 1950.  In the foreground is the North American X-15, This plane still holds the record for the fastest speed ever reached by a manned rocket-powered aircraft.  Enjoy the photos!

Remembering Pearl Harbor – HD Wallpaper

“December 7th, 1941.  A date which will live in infamy.”

There are few words which so embody our memories of WWII as these words spoken by FDR.  On a sunny Sunday morning, over 350 Japanese aircraft descended upon Pearl Harbor, killing over 2,400 people, destroying or severely damaging 23 ships, and 188 planes.  The attack, meant to cripple the Pacific Fleet, only partially succeeded in the short term, and in the end proved to waken a sleeping giant the likes of which the world had never seen.

As for so many, this is a personal story too.  Though none of my family was in Pearl Harbor during the attack, my grandfathers both served in the war – one flew P-51s over Europe, the other drove Sherman tanks during the Battle of the Bulge.  I was fortunate – both my grandfathers returned home.  But for countless thousands, Pearl Harbor marked but the beginning of the losses America would suffer during the war.

Today marks the 70th anniversary of that fateful day.   As a small token of our appreciation, I’ve put together a few images of WWII era aircraft for you to download.  Each image is HD, and is perfect for your desktop background.

Again, thank you to all those who served and sacrificed during WWII.

Flying High with Audi at the NAS JAX Air Show – Part 3 [The Panoramas]

Here’s our third and final installment from the air show – our Panoramas.

One of the unique things we provide at the majority of our shoots are ultra-high resolution panoramas.  This is a fun and unique way to capture all the activity in a wide area while maintaining lots of crisp quality, even at very large sizes.  Enjoy!

Flying High with Audi at the NAS JAX Air Show – Part 2 [The Planes]

Here’s Part 2 from this weekend’s Air Show. For those of you who missed the first post, we had the opportunity to shoot this year’s show on behalf of the title sponsor, Jack Hanania Automotive Group.

Aviation goes way back in my family.  My grandfather flew a P-51 during WWII and so the P-51 holds a special place in my heart (right next to my TR-6 if you were wondering).  The two P-51s above are flown by The Horsemen – the world’s only P-51 flight team.  It’s always a thrill to hear those mighty 16 cylinder engines come to life.  It’s a sound not easily forgotten!

For those of you who follow the blog, you already know I am a bit of a car nut, but you may not know that it was actually my love of aviation that brought me down to Florida.  I originally came down to Jacksonville University as a flight student.  Though I changed majors, my love for flying has never diminished.  So, having the opportunity to walk among such beautiful and storied aircraft, not to mention watch them fly, is quite a treat.

Above is a wonderfully restored example of the trainer variant of the Stearman model 75.   The first aircraft most WWII veterans flew, this plane taught countless thousands all the basics of military flying.  This particular Stearman is flown by John Mohr [of Mohr Barnstorming] – who put on a thrilling barnstormer-style display – flying just feet off the ground in a variety of unconventional attitudes.  It was all the more impressive this weekend because of the crazy crosswinds.  He’s truly a talented pilot!

Flying High with Audi at the NAS JAX Air Show – Part 1 [The Sponsor]

This weekend, we had the wonderful opportunity to photograph the NAS Jax Air Show on behalf of the title sponsor, Jack Hanania Automotive Group.  To shamelessly parody a cherished Christmas carol, though the weather outside was frightful, the stunts [and occasion warm jet wash] were quite delightful.  As you will see in a few photos below, we employed our ND filter for several unique time exposures of the crowd.  The one below is my favorite:

Jack Hanania Automotive Group has four dealerships in town, specializing in Audi, Acura, Hyundai, Mitsubishi and Volkswagen sales.  We had a great time getting to know some of their staff at the event, as they showed those daring souls who braved the cold, some of the great new cars from Audi, VW and Acura.    We hope you enjoy the photos!

Freebie! Nova Scotia: To and Fro (Part 3)

Well no journey would begin without travel, nor end without travel from our destination.  On this trip, we traveled via Delta Airlines and had the privilege [is privilege the right word?]  of visiting 5 separate airports, including extended visits to DC and Atlanta.  But the delays weren’t all bad – they allowed us to get some great aviation photos and make some new friends.  Enjoy!
